The Twospot Lionfish stands out from other members of its genus because of the 2 eyespots on its dorsal fin. It is also unique because of 2 feelers extending from its chin. Its body is covered in red, black, and white stripes. The pectoral fins are large and fan-shaped, the dorsal fins are shaped like quills. These fins as well as the pelvic fins are venomous. The sting is similar to a wasp sting but stronger. It can be very painful and may cause a severe reaction for people who are allergic to the venom. If stung, soak in very hot water and seek immediate medical assistance. An untreated wound can lead to a bacterial infection.

Twospot Lionfish are oviparous. When the females' eggs are fertilized, they float close to the surface. It has been possible to breed Two Spot Lionfish in captivity.

This species is distributed across the Indo-Pacific area. Locations include the Maldives, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Japan, and Australia. They can be found in areas with an abundance of coral, in the day they will hide on caves or among sponges. Their depth range is between 1-40 metres.

Tank Recommendations for the Twospot Lionfish

The smallest tank size you should house them in is a 30 gallons (114 litres) aquarium.

This species is reef compatible but will need monitoring. A suitable tank should have plenty of hiding places in ornaments and rockwork. There should also be areas of open water for swimming.

Twospot Lionfish need more care than other Lionfish. It is important to keep the water in perfect condition for them.

Suitable Tank Buddies

This species is semi-aggressive and may show aggression to aquarium companions.

It is a slow mover and may get outcompeted for food by faster predators.

Usually Compatible

The Two Spot Lionfish can cohabit with docile or semi-aggressive fish that are too big to fit in its mouth. Suitable fish include Large Angelfish, Boxfish, Foxface/Rabbitfish, Pufferfish, and Tangs.

Sometime Compatible

Caution is advised with Dwarf Angelfish, Anthias, Butterflyfish, Filefish, Grunts, Triggerfish, and Wrasses.

Rarely Compatible

Avoid fish which are small enough to fit in the Twospot Lionfish's mouth as it will stalk and eat them. Examples include Basslets, Blennies, Chromis, Dartfish, Pipefish, Seahorses, and crustaceans. Aggressive carnivores such as Sharks and Rays may outcompete it for food.

Feeding Your Two Spot Lionfish

Twospot Lionfish are carnivores. They eat meaty products including chopped crustaceans, live shrimp, and live fish. Shrimp and fish should be kept whole for optimum nutrition. Feed a few 2-3 times per week.
