The Thompson’s Surgeonfish is a passive species. It is an attractive, versatile fish, that looks great in any tank.

The Thompson’s Surgeonfish is usually a blueish grey brownish purple colour. Its fins and tail are a similar colour to the body with yellowish accents. At the base of the dorsal fin, right above the caudal peduncle, there is a little black mark. There are two types of Acanthurus thompsoni. Indian Ocean specimens are different to varieties from other regions. They have dark tails, whereas fish from Hawaii and other areas have white tails. Adults can reach a length of 11 inches (28 centimetres).

There is minimal information about this species breeding habits.

This species is native to the Indo-Pacific. Areas include East Africa, Mascarene Islands, Hawaiian, Ducie & Marquesan islands, & Japan. It can be found on the outer reef's steep slopes and drop-offs, over coral and sand. Usually between 3-65 feet (1-20 metres).

Tank Recommendations for the Thompson’s Surgeonfish

Tank size should be at least 180 gallons (681 litres).

The Thompsons Surgeonfish is suitable for reef or fish-only aquariums. It will need open swimming space and properly oxygenated water flow.

They are active grazers, and an aquarium will need a substantial amount of live rock.

Suitable Tank Buddies

This species has a peaceful temperament. It is best suited to a tank with passive tank buddies.

It may show aggression to similar looking fish & conspecifics.

There can be problems with other members of the Acanthuridae family. Aggression might also be shown to similar sized fish.

Rarely Compatible

Peaceful slow movers like Seahorses and Pipefish are unsuitable. Avoid aggressive species of Triggerfish, Angelfish, and Wrasse.

Feeding your Thompson's Surgeonfish

The Thompson's Surgeonfish is a herbivore, but will also consume some meaty foods. The bulk of its diet should consist of a variety of vegetables. These include Spirulina, broccoli, fresh macroalgae, zucchini, seaweed (Nori), and enriched vegetable flakes. It should be fed 2-3 times per day.
