These fish add colour and interest to the marine aquarium, from the royal blue of the Blue Tang to the brown Scopas Tang, with many varieties in between. Depending on the species, you can keep 1-3 individuals. Some species are considered easier to care for, such as the Scopas Tang, while others like the Lined Surgeonfish are more moderate to difficult.

These fish are primarily herbivorous and feed mainly on marine algae, though they will readily accept frozen foods. They may also eat nori sheets (sushi seaweed). They will feed throughout all levels of the aquarium and will also forage along the bottom.

Surgeonfish are generally ideal community fish and usually get along well with most other species, especially if no fish have already established territory. Some species can coexist peacefully together in larger aquariums, though care should be taken as certain surgeonfish may become aggressive toward one another.

They are excellent for controlling unwanted algae growth, but they may also consume desirable algae and plants, so caution is advised.

The Acanthuridae family is one of the most popular groups in the marine aquarium hobby. Due to the wide variety within the group, some species are peaceful while others can be aggressive. Maintaining excellent water quality is extremely important for long-term success. Good water quality also helps reduce the risk of marine white spot, which these fish can be prone to when stressed.

The best way to avoid health issues is to regularly monitor water quality, provide a nutritious diet and ensure they are housed correctly. With proper care, these beautiful fish can provide many years of enjoyment.
