Discus have held a pinnacle position in the freshwater aquarium hobby for decades; however, within the discus world, there is one fish that sits above almost everything else—the Heckel Discus. Often regarded as the "true" discus, Heckels are considered by many enthusiasts to be the most desirable and challenging wild discus available. The Curuduqui locality from Brazil is particularly sought after thanks to its incredible blue colouration and the strong, unmistakable characteristics that make Heckel discus so iconic.

The Wild Blue Heckel Curuduqui displays an incredible combination of electric blue horizontal striations layered across a rich golden-brown to olive body. Like all true Heckel discus, they develop the distinctive thick black centre bar that separates them from every other discus species. Depending on the individual and their mood, the body can also display subtle crimson tones around the shoulders and lower body, whilst the metallic blue patterning becomes increasingly intense under quality aquarium lighting. Against a black background, these fish are nothing short of spectacular, with the blue really shining through whilst still maintaining the natural beauty that only wild discus possess.

Trying to distinguish males from females is extremely difficult, with very few reliable visual differences between the sexes. The best method is to purchase a group of young fish and allow compatible pairs to form naturally. Like all discus, they lay eggs on smooth vertical surfaces before both parents carefully guard the eggs and later nourish the fry using the specialised mucus produced from their skin. Whilst breeding captive-bred discus is reasonably common, successfully breeding wild Heckels is considered a significant achievement due to their higher water quality requirements.

Wild Heckel Discus are a large-growing fish, reaching around 20 cm, and require exceptionally stable water conditions. A minimum aquarium size of 300 litres is recommended, although larger aquariums are always preferred as they provide greater water stability. A taller aquarium with driftwood, broad-leaved plants and open swimming areas provides an excellent environment for these fish. Stable water quality is absolutely essential, with soft, acidic water and elevated temperatures helping these fish thrive. Darker backgrounds and natural décor will also help showcase their incredible blue colouration.

Wild Heckel Discus are peaceful fish that should only be maintained with similarly peaceful species capable of tolerating elevated temperatures.

Usually Compatible
Cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, Sterbai Corydoras, peaceful bristlenose catfish, German blue rams and other slow-moving community fish suited to warm water.

Sometimes Compatible
Peaceful angelfish, larger tetras and smaller Geophagus species may coexist successfully, provided competition for food remains minimal.

Rarely Compatible
Fast-moving barbs, aggressive cichlids and highly active schooling fish should generally be avoided, as they may stress the discus or continually outcompete them during feeding.

Wild Heckel Discus require a high-quality, varied diet to maintain their condition. The ideal diet would consist of a premium slow-sinking discus pellet supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp. Feeding smaller portions several times throughout the day will help maintain excellent body condition whilst encouraging the rich blue colouration that makes this locality so highly prized.
