White Swan Discus 9cm
White Swan Discus
Discus have sat comfortably at the pinnacle of the freshwater aquarium hobby for decades, admired for their incredible colours, graceful swimming style and the challenge they present to dedicated aquarists. While many discus strains rely on bold reds, blues or intricate patterning, the White Swan Discus proves that sometimes simplicity is just as spectacular. Their almost flawless white body gives them an elegance that very few freshwater fish can match.
The White Swan Discus displays a beautiful porcelain-white body that appears almost luminous under aquarium lighting. Depending on the individual, subtle cream or ivory tones may develop across the shoulders, while the fins remain crystal clear with delicate white edging that enhances their graceful appearance. Unlike heavily patterned discus strains, the White Swan is all about clean lines and understated beauty. When displayed against dark backgrounds, black substrates or lush green plants, the brilliant white coloration becomes the undeniable centrepiece of the aquarium.
Trying to distinguish males from females is extremely difficult, as there are very few reliable external differences. The best method is to keep a small group of young discus and allow compatible pairs to form naturally. Once paired, they will lay eggs on smooth vertical surfaces before both parents guard the eggs and later nourish the fry using the specialised mucus secreted from their skin.
Tank Recommendations for your White Swan Discus
Discus are large-growing fish, reaching around 20 cm in length, and require exceptionally stable water conditions. A minimum aquarium size of 250 litres is recommended, although larger aquariums are always preferred as they provide greater water stability.
A planted aquarium with open swimming space is ideal, while darker backgrounds make the brilliant white coloration stand out beautifully. Discus thrive in warmer temperatures than most tropical fish and appreciate excellent filtration combined with regular water changes.
Suitable Tank Buddies
White Swan Discus are peaceful fish that do best alongside calm species capable of tolerating elevated temperatures.
Usually Compatible
Cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, Corydoras sterbai, German blue rams, bristlenose catfish and other peaceful fish suited to warmer water.
Sometimes Compatible
Larger peaceful tetras, peaceful angelfish and smaller Geophagus species can coexist successfully in spacious aquariums where competition for food is minimal.
Rarely Compatible
Fast-moving barbs, aggressive cichlids or fin-nipping species should be avoided, as they may stress the discus or outcompete them during feeding.
Feeding your White Swan Discus
Discus readily accept quality flakes and pellets but perform best on a varied diet. A premium slow-sinking discus pellet, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp and other high-quality frozen foods, will help maintain excellent health, encourage growth and keep these fish in peak condition.
