V.T Black & White Angelfish 8cm
Black and White Angelfish
Angelfish have remained one of the most recognisable freshwater aquarium fish for decades, and one of the biggest reasons for their continued popularity is the incredible number of selectively bred colour varieties available. While some modern strains rely on metallic blues or incredibly bright colours, the Black and White Angelfish takes a much simpler approach. The strong contrast between these two colours creates an incredibly clean pattern while retaining the unmistakable shape and graceful movement that angelfish are known for.
Every Black and White Angelfish can develop a slightly different pattern, with areas of crisp silver-white broken up by irregular patches of charcoal to jet black. Some individuals may be predominantly white with darker markings through the shoulders and fins, while others can develop considerably heavier black pigmentation across the body. Subtle silver and pale blue iridescence can also shine through the lighter scales depending on the aquarium lighting. The long dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins exaggerate this contrasting pattern as the fish moves, and against green plants or a lighter natural background, the darker sections really stand out.
Breeding Black and White Angelfish follows the same process as other domestic angelfish strains. Males and females are incredibly difficult to distinguish when young, with the most reliable differences becoming apparent once a compatible pair forms. They will clean a broad leaf, slate or another vertical surface before the female lays rows of adhesive eggs, which are fertilised by the male. Both parents then actively guard the eggs and developing fry.
Tank Recommendations for Your Black and White Angelfish
Black and White Angelfish are a medium-growing cichlid that can reach around 15 cm in height. A minimum aquarium size of 150 litres is recommended for a small group or breeding pair.
These fish appreciate taller aquariums that allow them to fully display their long finnage. Driftwood, broad-leaved plants and open swimming areas create an ideal environment. With this particular strain, lush green plants and natural timber create an excellent contrast against both the black and white portions of the body without causing either colour to disappear into the background.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Black and White Angelfish are peaceful cichlids and mix well with a wide variety of community fish.
Usually Compatible
Rummynose tetras, cardinal tetras, corydoras, bristlenose catfish, Congo tetras, pearl gouramis, and other peaceful community species that enjoy similar conditions.
Sometimes Compatible
Rainbowfish, German Blue Rams, keyhole cichlids and larger peaceful tetras may coexist successfully where sufficient swimming space is provided.
Rarely Compatible
Tiger barbs, Oscars, Jaguar cichlids and other aggressive or persistent fin-nipping species should generally be avoided, as they may damage the angelfish's finnage or continually stress them.
Feeding Your Black and White Angelfish
Black and White Angelfish are extremely easy to feed and will readily accept a wide variety of aquarium foods. The ideal diet would be a quality slow-sinking pellet or flake, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, and brine shrimp to maintain strong growth, excellent finnage and overall body condition.
