Goldfish make for a fantastic ornamental fish and have such a rich history that they carry. With all the vibrant colours and variations available in goldfish, the original ancestry of these fish is often forgotten. These uncoloured goldfish are surprisingly what the goldfish we know and love were bred from. Though these goldfish aren’t that appealing for a display aquarium, they offer a range of fantastic utility purposes. Looking exactly like a common comet-style goldfish with a lengthy and streamlined body, the only difference to these fish is colour.

They carry a uniform bronze colour with a slightly silvery toned underbelly but still grow, eat, and swim exactly like a coloured goldfish. These fish offer a few different purposes in the aquarium hobby, While they are not the best display fish they make for a great species to include in an aquaponics system. Goldfish produce a lot more waste compared to other aquarium fish and this is perfect in an aquaponics system as waste equals nutrients for plants. These goldfish are also used as live feeders, whilst controversial it is often a requirement for finicky, larger predatory fish that are not taken to prepared foods.

Whilst using these goldfish as a regular food source for predator fish does pose a range of health risks, in the short term and to wean fish onto prepared foods it can be a necessity. It is always recommended to quarantine and deworm feeders before giving them a predator fish. Breeding these uncoloured goldfish in a home aquarium style setting is not that common however in an outdoor pond, it will usually happen with time. The females are egg scatterers and as long as there is enough cover and
vegetation in the pond, there is a high chance that offspring will survive. Though there are not any immediate distinguishing factors between males and females, females tend to be more round.

Tank Recommendations for Uncoloured Goldfish
In the event these fish are being kept for ornamental purposes they can easily reach an excess of 20 cm so it is best to keep these fish in a large aquarium. The minimum volume should be around 350 litres for a full-grown fish. This ensures that there is enough space for swimming and a large enough volume for this generally messy fish. A sandy substrate will be great as goldfish often sift through the sand in search of food, Fine-leafed plants will easily become a meal however species like anubias will be fine to keep.

For the purposes of it is recommended to add this fish into a cycled quarantine tank with a minimum volume of 70 litres, it is always best to use a levamisole or praziquantel-based deworming medication to ensure there are no internal parasites. The fish should be observed to avoid developing any external diseases. It is also best to gut load them before feeding which essentially means feeding these fish a healthy pellet to ensure they have the best nutrients before being fed to a predator.

Suitable Tank Buddies
Uncoloured goldfish are great fish because they are not aggressive in the slightest and can be kept with a range of tank mates. Common tank mates they can be kept with are active and small Coldwater tolerant fish. The goldfish however might eat fry produced by these smaller fish however they will be perfectly fine with adults.

Feeding your Uncoloured Goldfish
These goldfish would be incredibly fun fish to feed because they will really set off a feeding frenzy with the sheer amount of fish. Giving a good quality pellet food would be the easiest and most nutritional option for these goldfish. They can also be fed green matter like blanched vegetables for added variation to the diet.
