TRICOLOUR GOLDEN BARB

Golden Barbs have been a favourite amongst community fish keepers for decades thanks to their hardiness, peaceful nature and constant activity. Whilst the standard Golden Barb is already an attractive fish, selective breeding has produced some incredible colour variations over the years. The Tricolour Golden Barb combines brilliant golden-yellow tones with contrasting black and orange markings, making it one of the more eye-catching barb varieties available.

The Tricolour Golden Barb develops a rich golden-yellow body overlaid with irregular patches of jet black and vibrant orange, giving every individual a completely unique appearance. Some fish display larger black saddles across the back, while others develop more orange through the shoulders and fins. As they mature, the colours become richer, with the golden body taking on a metallic sheen beneath aquarium lighting. Kept in a large school, these fish create a constantly moving display of colour that looks particularly impressive against green plants and darker backgrounds.

Sexing Tricolour Golden Barbs is relatively easy once mature. Males generally display brighter colours and remain slightly slimmer, whilst females develop a noticeably deeper body when carrying eggs. Like most barbs, they are egg scatterers, depositing adhesive eggs amongst fine-leaved plants where the eggs are left to develop without parental care.

Tank Recommendations for your Tricolour Golden Barb

Golden Barbs should always be maintained in schools of 6–8 or more, with larger schools producing more confident behaviour and reducing any minor aggression between individuals. A minimum aquarium size of 100 litres is recommended.

These fish appreciate planted aquariums with open swimming areas where they can remain active throughout the day. Fine gravel or sand substrates work equally well, whilst darker backgrounds help accentuate the bright golden body colour. Stable filtration and regular water changes will ensure these fish continue displaying their best colours.
