Tri Colour Oranda Goldfish

Fancy goldfish have been selectively bred for centuries, producing an incredible range of colours and body shapes that continue to captivate aquarists around the world. The Tri Colour Oranda is one of the more striking varieties, combining the famous Oranda head growth with an attractive mix of black, white, and orange that constantly changes as the fish matures.

Every Tri Colour Oranda develops a unique pattern of brilliant orange, crisp white, and velvety black across its rounded body. Many individuals continue changing colour throughout their lives, with black markings gradually fading or intensifying as they mature. Their flowing fins and prominent fleshy head growth, known as the wen, give them a graceful appearance that perfectly suits slower-moving fancy goldfish aquariums. Against dark backgrounds, the orange and white become especially vibrant, while lighter aquascapes help accentuate the darker markings.

Sexing Orandas is relatively difficult until they mature. During breeding season, males may develop small white breeding tubercles on the gill plates and pectoral fins, while females become noticeably rounder with eggs. They are egg scatterers, releasing thousands of adhesive eggs among plants or spawning mops.

Tank Recommendations for your Tri Colour Oranda

A dedicated fancy goldfish aquarium of 150 litres or larger is recommended, depending on stocking. Because of the wen growth and slower swimming speed, smooth décor and open swimming space are ideal. Strong filtration is important, but excessive current should still be avoided.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Tri Colour Orandas are peaceful and best suited to other fancy goldfish.

Usually Compatible
Ranchu, telescope goldfish, lionhead, pearlscale, and other Oranda varieties that share similar swimming abilities.

Sometimes Compatible
Other slow-swimming fancy goldfish varieties can generally be mixed successfully, provided there is adequate space and feeding opportunities.

Rarely Compatible
Comets, shubunkins, and common goldfish should generally be avoided, as they are much faster swimmers and will often outcompete Orandas for food.

Feeding your Tri Colour Oranda

These fish are extremely food-motivated and benefit from slower-sinking foods that reduce the risk of buoyancy issues. The ideal diet would consist of a premium sinking fancy goldfish pellet, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blanched peas, spinach, and other vegetables to promote healthy wen development and excellent digestio
