Short Tail Oranda 9cm
Fancy Goldfish are among the most elegant ornamental fish in the hobby, and the Short Tail Oranda is a beautiful, compact variation that combines the classic wen head growth with a stronger, more balanced swimming profile. Compared to long-finned orandas, the shorter tail gives these fish a stockier appearance and slightly better manoeuvrability, making them an excellent choice for dedicated fancy goldfish aquariums.

Short Tail Oranda
Fancy Goldfish are among the most elegant ornamental fish in the hobby, and the Short Tail Oranda is a beautiful, compact variation that combines the classic wen head growth with a stronger, more balanced swimming profile. Compared to long-finned orandas, the shorter tail gives these fish a stockier appearance and slightly better manoeuvrability, making them an excellent choice for dedicated fancy goldfish aquariums.
The Short Tail Oranda displays a deep, rounded body with the iconic fleshy wen growth developing over the forehead and cheeks as the fish matures. Their shorter caudal fin creates a more compact silhouette, which many hobbyists prefer for the stronger body proportions it gives the fish. Colouration can vary widely depending on the line, ranging from bright reds and whites through to calico and metallic orange tones. The rounded body, flowing dorsal fin, and balanced tail shape give them a graceful but sturdy movement through the aquarium.
Sexing is difficult outside of the breeding season, though males may develop breeding stars on the pectoral fins and gill plates. Females become broader through the body when carrying eggs, and spawning usually involves eggs being scattered across spawning mops or plants.
Tank Recommendations for Your Short Tail Oranda
A dedicated fancy goldfish aquarium of 150 litres or larger is recommended, depending on stocking. Because of the wen growth and slower swimming speed, smooth décor and open swimming space are ideal. Strong filtration is important, but excessive current should still be avoided.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Short Tail Orandas are peaceful and best suited to other fancy goldfish.
Usually Compatible
Ranchu, telescope goldfish, lionhead, and other orandas.
Sometimes Compatible
Other slow fancy varieties.
Rarely Compatible
Comets or common goldfish, which may outcompete them.
Feeding Your Short Tail Oranda
These fish are very food-motivated and do best on slower-sinking foods that reduce the risk of buoyancy issues. The ideal diet would be a high-quality sinking fancy goldfish pellet, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blanched peas, or spinach to maintain healthy wen growth and strong digestion.
