When it comes to nano tanks, having small playful tankmates are the key to success.
The species is a very amiable companion, The sexy shrimp is a perfect candidate for a nano tank.
The sexy shrimp (Thor amboinensis) is one of the most charming, engaging, and downright cute invertebrates available, not to mention colourful and booty shaking!
The shrimp’s size does not exceed more than 1¼ inches
They are also known as the Anenome Shrimp, As with other small shrimps, the sexy shrimp gains protection from the anemone and also appears to perform a cleaning service in return, helping keep the anemone free of detritus. It has been widely reported that the shrimp will feed on the anemone’s mucus and even its tentacle tips, though this seems to be a non-issue for the host, which can cope with the level of grazing.
It is peaceful towards members of its own species and other tankmates.
The Sexy Anemone Shrimp should not be housed in aquariums with predatory as the shrimp are perfect pieces of snack-sized protein for certain fishes, such as predatory wrasses, dottybacks, Angels etc
You can have them in with the smaller fish like Chromis, Damsels, Cardinals, but be sure to keep everyone well fed so they are not tempted to pick on the fish.
If you add shrimps before any fish, you will further reduce the risk of your shrimps getting eaten, which is recommended. Sexy shrimps will likely get along with other shrimp species, but they will be killed by the likes of the coral banded shrimp
Sexy shrimps by nature omnivores and in captivity will scavenge for meaty foods like mysis, They will also take some algae-based products ideally feed a varied diet of plankton and flaked, frozen, and meaty foods.
In a tank with more active tankmates, you may need to feed them directly, using small pellets via a pipette is a good option to do this.
Interestingly, the Sexy Anemone Shrimp is a relatively fast grower and will molt about once a month. Although very hardy, it requires a slow acclimation process to avoid any salinity and/or pH shock. Like other invertebrates, the Sexy Anemone Shrimp cannot tolerate high nitrate or copper levels. To promote proper molting, sufficient iodine levels must be maintained.
They love to live in groupls, it is highly recommended they live in groups of 3 or more, When they are kept in the groups their sexy epithet is earned, as they wave their backsides from side to side, lets be honest... a booty shaking shrimp is pretty cool!
They will thrive in small systems from 10 to 50 litres with an aquascape of live rock or real reef rock replica with the usual nooks and crannies.
In most cases, the shrimps will be quite visible and not spend their time hiding. Best of all, they are active during the day and not reclusive as some shrimp are.
