Red-Chinned Monroviae Panchax

African Killifish have always been popular amongst specialist aquarists because of their incredible colours, unusual breeding behaviour and the enormous variety of species available. The Red-Chinned Monroviae Panchax, Epiplatys dageti, is a particularly attractive West African species that combines the elongated body and surface-oriented behaviour of Panchax with beautiful natural markings. Unlike the heavily patterned Aphyosemion Killifish, much of the appeal of this species comes from its relatively clean body colouration and the brilliant red markings that develop around the throat and fins of mature males.

The Red-Chinned Monroviae Panchax develops an elongated, streamlined body with a pale golden to olive-brown base. Several darker vertical bands can become visible across the flanks, particularly when the fish is displaying or interacting with other individuals. Mature males develop beautiful red to orange pigmentation around the lower jaw and throat, creating the characteristic red chin that gives the fish its common name. Additional red, orange and darker markings may extend into the fins, whilst subtle metallic highlights can appear through the scales beneath subdued aquarium lighting. The flattened upper profile and slightly upturned mouth reflect the fish's natural preference for hunting near the surface. These fish often spend long periods hovering beneath floating plants before suddenly darting forward to capture small insects or other food items.

Sexing Red-Chinned Monroviae Panchax is relatively straightforward once mature. Males generally display stronger red colouration and more developed finnage, whilst females remain smaller and considerably more subdued in appearance. Unlike annual Killifish, Epiplatys dageti is a plant-spawning species. Compatible adults deposit adhesive eggs amongst fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with the eggs developing underwater rather than requiring a prolonged dry incubation period. The adults may consume eggs and fry, so dedicated breeding setups generally produce better results.

Tank Recommendations for Your Red-Chinned Monroviae Panchax

A minimum aquarium size of around 60 litres is recommended for a small group, with additional space beneficial when maintaining multiple males. These fish spend much of their time near the surface and appreciate a relatively calm aquarium with plenty of floating vegetation.

A densely planted aquarium containing driftwood, shaded areas and gentle filtration provides an excellent environment. Floating plants are particularly useful as they create sheltered areas and encourage more natural behaviour. A secure lid is absolutely essential because Panchax are capable jumpers and can easily escape through surprisingly small openings.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Red-Chinned Monroviae Panchax are generally peaceful but are opportunistic predators that may consume very small fish and shrimp.

Usually Compatible

Peaceful tetras, rasboras too large to be swallowed, Corydoras, small bristlenose catfish and other calm community species that occupy different areas of the aquarium.

Sometimes Compatible

Dwarf gouramis, Apistogramma and other small territorial fish may coexist successfully in larger planted aquariums, although competition around the surface should be monitored.

Rarely Compatible

Tiny fry, small shrimp and very small nano fish may be viewed as food. Tiger Barbs, large aggressive cichlids and other boisterous species should also be avoided, as they may continually stress these relatively calm surface dwellers.

Feeding Your Red-Chinned Monroviae Panchax

Red-Chinned Monroviae Panchax are carnivorous and naturally feed on insects and other small invertebrates near the water surface. Quality floating micro pellets may be accepted once established, although live and frozen foods such as daphnia, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp and bloodworms are particularly beneficial. Small foods that remain near the surface are generally preferred.
