Pigeon Blood Gold Hifin Discus
Discus have long been regarded as one of the pinnacle freshwater aquarium fish, with decades of selective breeding producing an incredible range of colours, patterns and body shapes. The Pigeon Blood Gold Hifin Discus combines the warm colouration of the Pigeon Blood strain with a beautiful golden base and more pronounced dorsal and anal finnage. Whilst traditional Pigeon Blood Discus are generally recognised for their red and cream patterning, the addition of stronger golden pigmentation gives this variety a particularly warm appearance that becomes increasingly impressive as the fish matures.
The Pigeon Blood Gold Hifin Discus develops a pale cream to golden-yellow body with rich orange and reddish pigmentation spreading across the face, flanks and fins. Depending on the individual, subtle irregular markings may be visible through the body, although the golden base generally remains the dominant feature. The Hifin trait produces more pronounced dorsal and anal fins, exaggerating the naturally rounded body and creating a taller, more impressive silhouette. Under aquarium lighting, the scales can develop a soft metallic sheen, with warmer orange highlights becoming particularly noticeable as the fish turns. Dark aquarium backgrounds and green plants provide an excellent contrast against the lighter gold and orange colouration, allowing the fish to stand out without the need for extremely bright lighting.
Sexing Pigeon Blood Gold Hifin Discus can be incredibly difficult, particularly whilst young. The most reliable method of obtaining a breeding pair is to raise a group of five or six individuals and allow compatible adults to pair naturally. Once paired, the fish will clean a vertical surface before depositing and fertilising rows of adhesive eggs. Both parents protect the developing eggs and fry, which eventually begin feeding from the specialised, nutrient-rich mucus produced on the skin of the adults.
Tank Recommendations for Your Pigeon Blood Gold Hifin Discus
A minimum aquarium size of around 250 litres is recommended for a properly maintained group of Discus, with larger aquariums preferred as the fish mature. These fish require warm, stable water conditions and excellent filtration, with temperatures around 28–30°C being ideal.
Driftwood, tall plants and shaded areas provide an excellent environment whilst leaving plenty of open swimming space. Strong filtration is important; however, excessive current should be avoided. A darker aquarium background works particularly well with this variety, as it contrasts beautifully against the golden body and warm red pigmentation.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Pigeon Blood Gold Hifin Discus are peaceful cichlids and should be maintained with equally calm fish capable of tolerating their higher temperature requirements.
Usually Compatible
Cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, Sterbai Corydoras, peaceful pencilfish and other calm, warm-water community species.
Sometimes Compatible
German Blue Rams, Angelfish and bristlenose catfish may coexist successfully in larger aquariums, although feeding competition, territorial behaviour and temperature requirements should be considered.
Rarely Compatible
Tiger Barbs, aggressive cichlids, large predatory fish and extremely active feeders should generally be avoided, as they can stress or outcompete Discus.
Feeding Your Pigeon Blood Gold Hifin Discus
Pigeon Blood Gold Hifin Discus thrive on a varied, high-quality diet. Slow-sinking Discus pellets or granules make an excellent staple and can be supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp and other suitable protein-rich foods. Quality foods containing natural carotenoids can also help support the golden and reddish colouration of this variety.
