Neon Danio

Danios have always been regarded as some of the toughest and most active freshwater fish available, making them an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists. The Neon Danio takes everything people love about traditional danios and adds an incredible iridescent sheen that flashes brilliantly as a school darts around the aquarium.

Neon Danios display a slender silver body that glows with metallic blue, turquoise and green iridescence depending on the angle of the light. Running through the body are subtle golden highlights that give the fish an almost neon appearance, particularly in planted aquariums with darker backgrounds. Their transparent fins allow the shimmering body colours to take centre stage, while their constant movement means the aquarium always feels full of life.

Sexing is relatively straightforward once mature, with females developing a noticeably deeper body while males remain slimmer and display slightly more vibrant colours. Like most danios, they are egg scatterers, releasing adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants where spawning generally occurs during the early morning hours.

Tank Recommendations for your Neon Danio

Neon Danios should always be maintained in schools of six or more, with larger groups producing much more natural behaviour. A minimum aquarium size of 75 litres is recommended.

A planted aquarium with generous open swimming space is ideal. These fish enjoy moderate water movement and a secure lid, as they are capable jumpers.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Neon Danios are peaceful but extremely active schooling fish.

Usually Compatible

Rasboras, rainbowfish, corydoras, peaceful barbs, dwarf gouramis, and almost all community fish that appreciate similar water conditions.

Sometimes Compatible

Angelfish and slower-moving species may coexist successfully in larger aquariums, although the danios will almost always outcompete them during feeding.

Rarely Compatible

Large predatory fish or delicate long-finned species that may become stressed by the danios' constant activity.

Feeding your Neon Danio

Neon Danios readily accept flakes, micro pellets and frozen foods. The ideal diet consists of a quality floating micro pellet or flake, supplemented with frozen baby brine shrimp and bloodworms to maximise colour and maintain excellent health.

Hi. What are the temperature and light conditions (outdoor natural vs artificial indoor cycle) for Zebra Danio 3.5cm? If outdoor, whereabouts in Australia are they? If indoor, what light cycle do they live in? Many thanks in advance!

    • Hi, Not a lot oo data on light conditions for Zebra Danio in the wild. However as they live in a number of tropical and sub-tropical regions, unfortunately there is no simple answer.

In captivity they are not fazed by length of day/night cycle, a typical 8-12 hours of artificial lighting will be fine.
