There is variation about the amount of yellow colouration on the bottom of the body of the Neon Blue Damselfish. In some individuals the whole of the body is bright blue whilst on others the bottom part of the body can also be yellow like the tail fin and anal fins.

These fish can be fairly aggressive and have even sometimes mob predators like moray eels to protect their nests when breeding.

When they breed the male will guard the eggs which are usually laid and attached to coral rubble substrate.

The Neon Blue Damsel fish is from the Indo Pacific region. It’s usually found in lagoons and outer reef slopes.

Tank Recommendations for Neon Blue Damselfish

These Damselfish like plenty of live rock to use for hiding places and also to provide some algae for them to eat.

The smallest tank size for these fish is at least 30 gallons. Live corals can be in the tank with these fish without any issues.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Although the Neon Blue Damselfish is only a small fish they are aggressive. They can be confrontational to other tank mates, even larger ones.

Usually Compatible

Generally the best tank mates for these Damsels are Dwarf Angelfish and larger Angerlfish. Clownfish, Shrimps, Crabs, Dragonettes, Gobies, Hogfish, Pufferfish and Tangs also mix well. So there are plenty of options to make a very lively and entertaining combination of fish with these little guys.

Sometime Compatible

Problems keeping these Damsels with other Damselfish isn't uncommon. If keeping many Neon Blue Damselfish together then ensure to keep them in a larger tank, allowing an extra 20 gallons for each extra individual.

If you have other Damsels which are of similar colouration such as the Yellow Tail Damsel then follow the tank recommendation as if they were the same species. These Damselfish are usually okay with Batfish, Cardinalfish, Filefish, Rays and Triggerfish.

Rarely Compatible

Don't keep these fish with Scorpion fish, Lionfish, Eels, Sharks or Snappers as all are likely to eat the Damselfish.

Slow swimmers like Seahorses and Pipefish also don’t do will with Damselfish as they will be not be able to compete with the Damsels for food resources.

Feeding Your Neon Blue Damselfish

In the wild these fish feed on zooplankton and benthic algae gleaned from coral rubble.

In captivity these Damsels will accept a wide variety of foods. Live foods like mysis shrimp andbrine shrimp as well as shredded frozen fish. They will also take flake and pellet foods and will of course also eat algae in the tank from live rock.

Feeding 2 - 3 small meals per day will help to reduce their aggressiveness over guarding food resources.
