Ghost Angelfish 4.5cm
Angelfish have remained one of the most recognisable freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby for decades, and the sheer number of colour varieties available today shows just how extensively this species has been selectively bred. The Ghost Angelfish is an interesting contrast to some of the incredibly bright modern strains because its appeal comes from the reduction of traditional markings, resulting in a much cleaner and more subtle-looking fish.
Ghost Angelfish
Angelfish have remained one of the most recognisable freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby for decades, and the sheer number of colour varieties available today shows just how extensively this species has been selectively bred. The Ghost Angelfish is an interesting contrast to some of the incredibly bright modern strains because its appeal comes from the reduction of traditional markings, resulting in a much cleaner and more subtle-looking fish.
Ghost Angelfish generally display a beautiful silver to pale grey body with significantly reduced vertical barring compared to a standard wild-type angelfish. The body can develop metallic silver, pale blue, and subtle green highlights depending on the individual and aquarium lighting, whilst darker pigmentation may remain around portions of the fins and back. Because there is less patterning across the flanks, the classic triangular body profile and long trailing fins become much more noticeable. These fish look particularly impressive in densely planted aquariums or against darker backgrounds, where their silver colour creates a very clean contrast.
Breeding Ghost Angelfish follows the same process as other domestic angelfish strains. Males and females can be incredibly difficult to distinguish outside of spawning, making it easiest to raise a small group and allow pairs to form naturally. Once paired, the fish clean a broad leaf, slate, or other vertical surface before depositing rows of adhesive eggs. Both parents will guard the eggs and developing fry.
Tank Recommendations for your Ghost Angelfish
Ghost Angelfish are a medium-growing cichlid that can reach around 15 cm in height. A minimum aquarium size of 150 litres is recommended for a small group or breeding pair.
These fish appreciate taller aquariums that allow them to fully display their long finnage. Driftwood, broad-leaved plants, and open swimming areas create an ideal environment, whilst a dark background works particularly well against the pale silver body of this strain. Good filtration and regular water changes will keep these fish looking their absolute best.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Ghost Angelfish are peaceful cichlids and mix well with a wide variety of community fish.
Usually Compatible
Rummynose tetras, cardinal tetras, corydoras, bristlenose catfish, Congo tetras, pearl gouramis, and other peaceful community species.
Sometimes Compatible
Rainbowfish, German blue rams, keyhole cichlids, and larger peaceful tetras can work well in sufficiently spacious aquariums.
Rarely Compatible
Tiger barbs, Oscars, Jaguar cichlids, and other aggressive or persistent fin-nipping fish should be avoided, as they can damage the angelfish's long fins.
Feeding your Ghost Angelfish
Ghost Angelfish are extremely easy to feed and readily accept most aquarium foods. The ideal diet would be a quality slow-sinking pellet or flake supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, and brine shrimp. A varied diet will maintain strong growth, finnage, and overall body condition.
