Flying Barb

The Flying Barb is one of the more unusual members of the barb family, prized for its slender body shape, active schooling behaviour, and incredible speed through the aquarium. Unlike many deeper-bodied barbs, these fish spend much of their time darting through the upper and middle water column, giving rise to their common name. Their energetic behaviour makes them an excellent addition to larger planted community aquariums.

Flying Barbs display a sleek silver body with subtle gold and olive iridescence that changes depending on the angle of the light. A dark lateral stripe runs cleanly from the gill plate through to the tail, creating a striking contrast against the metallic body. The fins remain mostly transparent with soft yellow highlights, allowing the streamlined body shape to become the focal point. When maintained in large schools, they move through the aquarium with incredible synchronisation, creating an almost mesmerising display.

Sexing Flying Barbs is relatively straightforward once mature, with females developing a noticeably deeper body than the slimmer males. Like many cyprinids, they are egg scatterers, releasing adhesive eggs among plants where spawning generally occurs during the early morning hours.

Tank Recommendations for your Flying Barb

Flying Barbs should always be kept in schools of six or more, with a minimum aquarium size of 150 litres recommended due to their constant activity. They appreciate long aquariums with plenty of open swimming space combined with planted edges for cover. Moderate water movement and a secure lid are recommended, as these fish are strong swimmers and capable jumpers.

Flying Barbs are extremely peaceful but energetic schooling fish.

Usually Compatible
Rainbowfish, larger rasboras, danios, peaceful barbs, corydoras, and other active community fish that enjoy similar swimming conditions.

Sometimes Compatible
Angelfish, gouramis, and slower species may coexist well in larger aquariums, although Flying Barbs can easily outcompete them during feeding.

Rarely Compatible
Very small nano fish or delicate long-finned species may become stressed by the Flying Barb's constant activity and fast swimming behaviour.

Feeding your Flying Barb

Flying Barbs are enthusiastic feeders that will readily accept flakes, pellets and frozen foods. A varied diet consisting of quality floating pellets, flake food and occasional frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp will keep them in excellent health and maximise their natural colours.
