Conspicuous Angelfish - Large
Many aquarists consider the Conspicuous Angelfish the Holy Grail of marine aquarium fish. This fish is always the main attraction in any aquarium. Adults are recognisable with yellow faces with blue rings around the eyes.
It has a blue dorsal and anal fin, which are dark at the base and pale towards the edges. It’s body is blue to grey below the dorsal fin changing to a dusky dark brown to black colour at the bottom of the body.
The Conspicuous Angel has no distinguishing characteristics to help differentiate males from females
Juveniles look very different being black with greenish white dorsal fins.
The Conspicuous Angelfish originates from Australia. It lives from the southern Great Barrier Reef to the central New South Wales coast and Lord Howe Island.
Adults live around coral and rocky reefs, with the Juveniles living in shallower water in protected harbours and bays.
These beautiful rare fish can grow up to 12 inches (30cm).
Conspicuous Angelfish although peaceful are quite tough and hardy and won't get bullied easily. That's why they are always a great addition to your tank.
Tank Recommendations for Conspicuous Angelfish
The smallest size of tank for these fish should be at least 682 litres (150 gallons). The bigger the better! They prefer a tall tank as opposed to long tank.
Be cautious about introducing these fish to a reef tank as these guys love to snack. They will and nip on encrusting invertebrates, hard corals, tubeworms, and clam mantles, and may also have a nip at the oral discs of sea anemones.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Non-aggressive tankmates for your Conspicuous Angelfish will work best that will not nip at their large flowing fins.
Conspicuous Angelfish whilst generally peaceful, can be very aggressive eaters and also become territorial while breeding.
Usually Compatible
Species such as Basslets, Batfish, Blennies, Boxfish, Butterfly Fish, Clown Fish, Damsels, Rabbit Fish, Sweetlips, Hogfish, Parrot fish, Puffers, Tangs and Surgeons are all good choices for a drama free tank.
Sometime Compatible
Be cautioius if considering species such as Cardinals, Dartfish, Filefish, Gobies and Cleaner Wrasse as they may stuggle to eat. Whilst Groupers, Jawfish, Eels, Lionfish/Scorpions, Triggerfish and other Angelfish will compete for the same food sources.
Invertebrates and Live Corals can sometimes find themselves on this fishes snack menu. Conspicuous Angelfish can be quite territorial and aggressive to the same sex when breeding.
Rarely Compatible
Species which are a definite no-nos include (some) Sharks and Rays. This Angelfish won't share food with Seahorses and pipefish, so they wouldn't be able to feed .
Feeding Your Conspicuous Angelfish
These fish are omnivores so you can give them a varied diet of veg and meat. Vegetable foods include frozen or steamed spinach leaves, spirulina algae and pellet foods. Also a mixed variety of meaty foods including chopped shrimp, clams, squid, and shredded fish.
