Celestial Pearl Danio (Galaxy Rasbora)

There aren't many fish that have created as much excitement in the aquarium hobby as the Celestial Pearl Danio. When this tiny species was first discovered, it quickly became one of the most sought-after nano fish in the world, and it's easy to understand why. Their combination of galaxy-like spotting, fiery orange fins, and peaceful nature has kept them among the most desirable nano aquarium fish ever since.

The Celestial Pearl Danio displays a deep midnight blue body covered in brilliant pearly white spots, giving the impression of a star-filled night sky. Mature males develop vivid orange to crimson fins with contrasting black edging, while females display a softer overall coloration and a fuller body shape. Under quality aquarium lighting, these tiny fish shimmer with metallic blues and greens, making them one of the most rewarding species to observe in heavily planted aquascapes.

Sexing is relatively easy once mature, with males displaying brighter colours, stronger finnage, and slimmer bodies than females. They are egg scatterers and breed readily in mature planted aquariums, depositing small adhesive eggs among mosses and fine-leaved plants. Adults provide no parental care and may consume the eggs, so separate breeding setups generally achieve the best success.

Tank Recommendations for your Celestial Pearl Danio

A school of eight or more is recommended, with a minimum aquarium size of 40 litres.

These fish thrive in densely planted aquariums featuring mosses, driftwood, and floating plants that provide both shelter and spawning sites. Gentle water movement and darker substrates help maximise their spectacular colours.

Celestial Pearl Danios are exceptionally peaceful and ideal for nano community aquariums.

Usually Compatible

Chili rasboras, ember tetras, pygmy corydoras, otocinclus, kuhli loaches, and other peaceful nano species that won't outcompete them during feeding.

Sometimes Compatible

Shrimp and peaceful dwarf gouramis may coexist successfully in mature planted aquariums with plenty of cover.

Rarely Compatible

Larger barbs, cichlids, or fast-swimming community fish should generally be avoided, as they may intimidate these small danios or outcompete them for food.

Feeding your Celestial Pearl Danio

Due to their tiny mouths, Celestial Pearl Danios should be offered fine flake, crushed pellets or quality micro foods. Supplementing with baby brine shrimp, microworms and other live or frozen foods will greatly enhance their colours and encourage breeding.
