Assorted Ranchu

Ranchu goldfish are considered one of the most prized fancy goldfish varieties and are often referred to as the "king of goldfish" by enthusiasts. Originally developed in Japan, these fish are known for their rounded bodies, smooth backs, and distinctive head growth called a wen.

Ranchu goldfish have a very unique appearance compared to other goldfish varieties. Their bodies are short and rounded, with no dorsal fin, giving them a smooth, curved back profile. The head often develops a fleshy growth that becomes more pronounced with age. Assorted ranchu may display a variety of colours, including red, white, orange, calico, and combinations of these patterns.

Breeding ranchu goldfish follows the typical goldfish spawning behaviour. During breeding season, males develop small white breeding tubercles on their gill plates and begin chasing females around the aquarium or pond. Females scatter eggs across plants or spawning mops, where they are fertilised externally by the males.

Tank Recommendations for Your Assorted Ranchu

Ranchu goldfish require aquariums with plenty of swimming space and excellent filtration. A minimum aquarium size of 150 litres is recommended, depending on the number of fish kept.

Because of their rounded body shape, they are not particularly strong swimmers, so they should avoid strong currents. A simple aquascape with open space works best.

Ranchu goldfish are peaceful fish and should ideally be kept with other fancy goldfish varieties.

Feeding Your Assorted Ranchu

Ranchu goldfish are omnivorous and will readily eat pellets, flakes, and frozen foods.

Specialised sinking goldfish pellets work particularly well, as they reduce the chance of air ingestion.
