The Pinoy Angelfish has become one of the most popular selectively bred angelfish strains thanks to its incredibly dark body colour and shimmering iridescent highlights. Developed through decades of careful, selective breeding, this variety offers a completely different look to traditional silver angelfish and makes an outstanding display fish in planted aquariums. Every individual is slightly different, meaning no two Pinoy angelfish are ever quite the same.
The Assorted Pinoy Angelfish is best recognised for its deep charcoal to jet-black body colour, which is often overlaid with beautiful metallic blue, emerald green or steel-purple iridescence depending on the genetics and aquarium lighting. Some individuals may display subtle marbling throughout the fins or body, while others develop an almost completely solid black appearance. Their long, flowing fins and tall body profile create an elegant silhouette that glides effortlessly through the aquarium. Against lush green plants or lighter-coloured substrates, the metallic highlights become incredibly vibrant and make this one of the most eye-catching angelfish strains available.
Sexing angelfish is relatively difficult, especially when young, as males and females look very similar. As they mature, compatible pairs will naturally form and begin spawning on broad leaves, driftwood, or aquarium glass. Both parents usually take part in guarding the eggs and newly hatched fry, making them an enjoyable species for hobbyists interested in breeding cichlids.
Tank Recommendations for your Assorted Pinoy Angelfish
Angelfish are taller-bodied fish and require aquariums with both height and length. A minimum aquarium size of 150 litres is recommended, with larger aquariums always preferred.
They thrive in planted aquariums with open swimming space and vertical structures such as driftwood or taller plants. Lighter-coloured substrates or vibrant green plants create an excellent contrast against the dark body colour, allowing the metallic blue and green highlights to really stand out.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Assorted Pinoy Angelfish are generally peaceful community fish, but may become territorial while breeding.
Usually Compatible
Cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, black widow tetras, corydoras, bristlenose catfish, peaceful rainbowfish, and other similarly sized community fish.
Sometimes Compatible
Blue rams, apistogramma, larger gouramis, and other peaceful cichlids that are unlikely to compete aggressively for territory.
Rarely Compatible
Tiger barbs and other fin-nipping species should be avoided, along with very small nano fish that could eventually be viewed as food by mature angelfish.
Feeding your Assorted Pinoy Angelfish
Assorted Pinoy Angelfish are extremely easy to feed and readily accept a wide variety of aquarium foods. The ideal diet would consist of a quality flake or slow-sinking cichlid pellet, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms or brine shrimp to maintain excellent health, encourage breeding and maximise the brilliant metallic colours this strain is known for.
