Assorted Bubble Eye

When it comes to the captivating world of fancy goldfish, the Bubble Eye Goldfish is a true spectacle of unique and fascinating appearance. As one of the most unconventional and charming varieties, this strain is beloved by hobbyists who appreciate its delicate, fluid-filled eye sacs that give them an otherworldly look. These goldfish were originally developed in China, and through selective breeding, have become a staple in the fancy goldfish hobby.

Bubble Eye Goldfish are best known for their large, bubble-like sacs located under their eyes, which are filled with clear fluid. These bubbles develop as the fish matures and can grow to quite an impressive size. The body shape of the Bubble Eye Goldfish is similar to that of other fancy varieties, featuring a short, rounded body and double tail fins. They can be found in a wide range of colours, including orange, red, white, black, calico, and various combinations of these hues.

Due to their fragile eye sacs, Bubble Eye Goldfish are not strong swimmers and require special care and consideration when setting up their environment. Breeding these fish is possible, though challenging due to their unique anatomy. Males will often chase females when ready to spawn, and eggs are usually laid on plants or spawning mops. Raising the fry requires careful attention to water quality and feeding.

Tank Recommendations for Assorted Bubble Eye Goldfish

Bubble eye goldfish can grow up to 15 cm, meaning they should be kept in a tank of at least 100 litres for a single fish. As with many fancy goldfish, larger aquariums are always better, especially when keeping multiple individuals together.

These goldfish are extremely delicate, especially when it comes to their eye sacs. A tank with a sand substrate or bare-bottom setup is recommended to prevent injury. Decorations should be kept to a minimum and should be smooth and rounded if present. Sharp objects like driftwood, jagged rocks, or pointy plastic plants should be avoided. Gentle water flow is best, as Bubble Eye Goldfish are not strong swimmers.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Bubble Eye Goldfish are extremely peaceful and docile, making them great candidates for dedicated goldfish aquariums or with other slow-moving and gentle species.

Usually Compatible

Medaka ricefish, Paradise Fish, Zebra Danios, and White Cloud Mountain Minnows.

Sometimes Compatible

Livebearers such as guppies, mollies, platies, and similar, which should get along fine, but pose the risk of outcompeting in large numbers.

Rarely Compatible

Discus, neon tetras, rams, oscars, and other high-end tropical or aggressive species.

Feeding your Assorted Bubble Eye Goldfish

Bubble Eye Goldfish are easy to feed but require special care when it comes to food type and feeding methods. Due to their poor eyesight and delicate nature, slow-sinking foods are ideal. High-quality pellets or flakes with a good balance of algae and spirulina content are recommended to suit their mostly herbivorous diet.
