Aphyosemion Gardneri Gold

There aren't many freshwater fish that can rival a good killifish when it comes to colour. Despite their relatively small size, species like the Gold Gardneri display colours that would look right at home on a coral reef. Their vibrant appearance, fascinating breeding behaviour, and manageable size have made them one of the true hidden gems of the freshwater aquarium hobby.

The Gold Gardneri displays a stunning golden-yellow body covered with iridescent blue spotting that extends across the entire fish. Mature males develop spectacular flowing fins trimmed with bright crimson edging, while the body flashes shades of emerald, sapphire, and turquoise beneath aquarium lighting. Every movement reveals a slightly different combination of colours, making them one of the most rewarding nano fish to observe in a planted aquarium.

Males are easily distinguished from females by their brighter colours, extended finnage, and larger size. Like other Gardneri killifish, they readily deposit adhesive eggs among spawning mops and fine-leaved plants. Given suitable conditions, they are one of the easiest killifish species to breed in the home aquarium.

Tank Recommendations for your Gold Gardneri

A minimum aquarium size of 40 litres is recommended.

Heavily planted aquariums with floating plants, driftwood, and subdued lighting best replicate their natural habitat. A tightly fitting lid is absolutely essential due to their remarkable jumping ability.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Gold Gardneri are peaceful community fish when housed alongside similarly sized species.

Usually Compatible
Ember tetras, pygmy corydoras, kuhli loaches, rasboras, and other peaceful nano fish.

Sometimes Compatible
Peaceful gouramis and smaller rainbowfish can coexist successfully in larger planted aquariums.

Rarely Compatible
Large predatory fish, fin-nipping barbs, and very small shrimp should generally be avoided.

Feeding your Gold Gardneri

These fish readily accept quality micro pellets and flakes but truly thrive when supplemented with frozen bloodworms, daphnia, baby brine shrimp and other live foods that encourage breeding and maximise colour.
