Killifish are some of the most underrated gems in the aquarium hobby, often prized by experienced aquarists for their intense colours, fascinating breeding behaviour, and rarity. Aphyosemion bivitatum is a beautiful wild-caught species that showcases everything hobbyists love about West African killifish. Their smaller size, intricate markings, and active top-water behaviour make them ideal for planted nano aquariums or species-only displays.

Wild Aphyosemion bivitatum display a slender, elongated body shape with beautiful iridescent patterning running from head to tail. The base body colour is often a pale cream to olive tone, overlaid with vibrant blue, turquoise, and red spotting depending on sex and mood. Males are significantly more colourful, with extended dorsal and caudal fins often carrying orange and red edging. In soft natural lighting, the body can shimmer with metallic greens and blues, making them incredibly striking for such a small species.

Sexing this species is very easy, with males displaying brighter colours and extended fins, while females remain smaller and more subdued. Breeding is one of the major attractions of killifish, and Aphyosemion bivitatum are substrate or mop spawners that deposit eggs amongst fine plants or spawning mops. The eggs can be collected and incubated separately before hatching.

Tank Recommendations for your Aphyosemion bivitatum

A small group can be comfortably housed in aquariums from 20–40 litres, though planted species tanks often work best. These fish thrive in soft, acidic water with plenty of plant cover, floating plants, and minimal flow. A secure lid is essential, as killifish are surprisingly capable jumpers despite their small size.

Aphyosemion bivitatum will take aquarium foods very easily. They will accept a wide range of floating pellets, flakes, and frozen foods. Providing a varied diet of protein-rich micro pellets along with baby brine shrimp will ensure they maintain optimal health.
