Just like a lot of other rainbow fish, as juveniles, these Coen River rainbows tend to look washed out, which turns a lot of beginner aquarists away. Once these fish put on a few centimetres, they look majestic with the metallic yellow body colour overlaid with shimmering hues of green, blue, and orange. The scales are all criss-crossed with orange lines, which contrast with the classic jet black lateral bar. Under some quality aquarium lighting and plants, these fish will be breathtaking.
Breeding these rainbows in the home aquarium is possible, as males tend to grow larger and show far more vibrant colours compared to females. Once these fish reach maturity, they tend to breed on an almost daily basis, and aquarists often use breeding mops to collect the eggs and rear them in a separate tank. What's great about this colony of 5 fish is that they are already a breeding size, with there being a perfect ratio of 2 males and three females for spawning. Feeding newborn rainbow fish can be challenging purely because the fish need to be fed on a very regular basis; however, it does make for a rewarding experience.
