2x Austrolebias Paucisquama 2cm
There probably isn't another group of aquarium fish with a life cycle quite as fascinating as South American annual Killifish. Unlike most freshwater species, these fish naturally inhabit temporary pools that can completely dry out during part of the year. Rather than migrating to permanent water, annual Killifish have evolved to complete their adult life cycle within the wet season, leaving behind eggs buried in the substrate that survive until the next period of rainfall.

Austrolebias paucisquama is a particularly interesting and uncommon example from southern Brazil, making it a fantastic species for experienced aquarists interested in the natural history and breeding behaviour of annual Killifish.
Male Austrolebias paucisquama develop a compact body with a dark grey to charcoal base colour. Brilliant blue iridescence can become visible through the scales and fins, with the pectoral fins displaying particularly attractive metallic highlights. The intensity of this colour can change depending on lighting and breeding condition, with mature males becoming noticeably more impressive during displays. Females are considerably more subdued, displaying a pale brown to olive body with small darker markings that help camouflage them against the muddy substrate of their natural habitat. Despite their small size, these fish have a surprisingly strong presence in a dedicated aquarium, with males regularly displaying their fins and investigating the bottom in search of food.
Sexing Austrolebias paucisquama is relatively straightforward once mature, with males displaying stronger colouration and females retaining a more subdued appearance. Breeding is where this species becomes particularly fascinating. Adults deposit their eggs into soft substrate, where the embryos undergo periods of developmental arrest known as diapause. In captivity, breeders commonly collect the spawning substrate and incubate it under controlled conditions before rewetting it to simulate the return of seasonal rainfall. Unlike ordinary aquarium egg scatterers, these eggs are adapted to survive periods without standing water.
Tank Recommendations for Your 2x Austrolebias Paucisquama
This listing contains two fish, making a dedicated species aquarium of around 40 litres or larger an excellent starting point, provided the individuals are compatible. These are specialist annual Killifish and should not be treated as ordinary tropical community fish.
A soft substrate or suitable spawning container should be provided, alongside leaf litter, plants and sheltered areas. Water should remain clean, relatively soft and, importantly, cooler than that used for most tropical aquarium fish. Temperatures around 18–22°C are preferable, and prolonged exposure to high tropical temperatures should be avoided. A secure lid is essential.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Austrolebias paucisquama is best maintained in a dedicated species aquarium where its breeding behaviour and feeding requirements can be managed properly.
Usually Compatible
Other individuals of the same species, provided the aquarium offers sufficient space and cover to reduce aggression between males.
Sometimes Compatible
Very small, peaceful cool-water species may coexist in larger aquariums, although a species-only setup is strongly preferred when breeding is intended.
Rarely Compatible
Warm-water community fish, large cichlids, predatory catfish and aggressive Killifish should generally be avoided. Species requiring sustained temperatures above 25°C are particularly unsuitable for this cool-water annual Killifish.
Feeding Your 2x Austrolebias Paucisquama
Austrolebias paucisquama is carnivorous and naturally feeds on small aquatic invertebrates. Live and frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae and appropriately sized bloodworms are ideal. A varied, protein-rich diet is particularly important because annual Killifish grow and mature quickly, with adults investing considerable energy into reproduction during their relatively short natural lifespan.
