Yellow Peacock Cichlid 5cm
The Yellow Peacock Cichlid is a selectively bred African cichlid prized for its intense golden coloration and active personality. With colours that rival saltwater fish, it’s a standout choice for freshwater display tanks and a vibrant addition to any African cichlid setup.
Yellow Peacock Cichlid
African peacock cichlids have developed a cult following thanks to their unmatched colours and personality. Their vibrancy often rivals that of saltwater species, making them a prime choice for freshwater aquarists seeking a striking display tank. Many popular peacock varieties are the result of selective breeding, and one of the standout designer strains is the Yellow Peacock Cichlid—a radiant and active fish that brings a burst of gold to any African cichlid aquarium.
The Yellow Peacock sports a dazzling lemon-yellow to bright golden hue across its entire body, often with faint metallic blue undertones on the face and fins, particularly in mature males. The fins are long and pointed, enhancing their confident and active swimming behaviour.
While the base colour remains fairly consistent, there is some natural variation in intensity and brightness from fish to fish. This strain is particularly popular for its contrast against darker backgrounds or rockwork and makes an ideal centrepiece in any Malawi-themed setup. Like other peacocks, they are semi-aggressive, with their intensity increasing during territorial disputes or breeding.
Distinguishing between male and female Yellow Peacocks is relatively easy. One of the most reliable methods is to examine the egg spots on the anal fin. Males typically have many egg spots, while females have few or none. Another method is to observe the dorsal and ventral fin tips, which are more pointed in males and more rounded in females. African peacock cichlids are native to Lake Malawi.
Tank Recommendations for your Yellow Peacock Cichlid
The Yellow Peacock is a very active fish that requires a tank of at least 470 litres and a minimum length of around 4 feet. One of the most important considerations for this species is the aquarium environment itself. As Yellow Peacock Cichlids can be aggressive toward one another, providing plenty of visual breaks within the tank is essential.
These fish also require a higher pH of around 8.0, which can be maintained through the use of crushed coral or aragonite sand, along with appropriate conditioning salts. To further enhance their vibrant colouration, using a dark or black background is highly recommended.
Suitable Tank Buddies
The Yellow Peacock is relatively peaceful and can be kept with other colour variations of peacock cichlids. Overstocking peacocks is commonly used to reduce aggression and territorial behaviour; however, this often leads to increased maintenance and more frequent water changes. This can be avoided by keeping fewer fish in a larger aquarium with ample visual breaks. They may also be kept with peaceful Mbunas and Haps, with careful consideration.
Usually Compatible
Other African peacocks, such as Dragon Bloods or Neon Blues, as well as common species like Electric Yellow Labs.
Sometimes Compatible
Larger Haps such as Venustus, Fossorochromis species, and smaller African cichlids such as Julidochromis.
Rarely Compatible
Shrimp and nano aquarium fish such as neon tetras and ember tetras, as well as very aggressive South American cichlids like Oscars and Jaguar Cichlids.
Feeding your Yellow Peacock Cichlid
Yellow Peacocks, like other peacock cichlids, are very easy to feed. They are opportunistic feeders and will readily accept a wide range of dry, fresh, and frozen foods. Their diet should include high-quality African cichlid pellets with a high spirulina or vegetable content. Feeding once daily is sufficient for healthy growth and colouration.
