White Fin Ornate Tetra

The White Fin Ornate Tetra is an elegant and eye-catching species hailing from the freshwater rivers and tributaries of South America. These tetras stand out with their graceful appearance and subtle colour palette, making them an underrated gem in the world of community fish. While they may not be as instantly recognisable as neon or cardinal tetras, the white fin ornate tetra brings a delicate flair and gentle presence to planted or softwater biotope aquariums.

The species is characterised by its slightly tall-bodied shape and soft golden-bronze base colour. As the name suggests, the defining feature is its milky-white dorsal and caudal fin tips, often appearing iridescent in the right lighting. Males tend to display stronger contrast and more pointed fins, while females are rounder in the body and slightly paler in colour. These tetras typically reach around 4.5 to 5 cm in length, making them ideal for mid-sized community tanks. They share a similar body plan to bleeding hearts, black phantoms, and black widow tetras, but the soft white highlights make them a unique choice, especially in a dark or blackwater-themed tank.

Like most tetras, the white fin ornate is an egg scatterer and fairly easy to breed. The male will court the female with fluttering fin displays before she releases her eggs among fine plants or spawning mops. Fertilisation occurs quickly, and the adults should be removed to avoid predation. A breeding trio of one male and two females in a separate tank with soft water and fine-leaved plants or spawning mops will usually yield success. The fry are small but manageable to raise with infusoria or powdered fry food.

Tank Recommendations for your White Fin Ornate tetra

Being a small and relatively easy to care for fish, the White Fin Ornate tetra can be kept in smaller aquariums with a minimum being 75 litres. This aquarium size allows for a decent school of these tetras, along with other community fish if required. White Fin Ornate tetras would also look equally amazing in large schools of 20 or more in a larger aquarium setting, which really highlights their shoaling behaviour.

A sand or gravel substrate would be fine for these fish, as well as a lot of plant growth, which not only makes them contrast really well but also makes them more comfortable in the aquarium. Having a darker background and lighting that has a red spectrum will really bring out the best colours in these fish.
