Apistogramma Viejita Red Neck

For aquarists searching for a true centrepiece dwarf cichlid with a bold personality and striking colour, the Apistogramma Viejita Red Neck is an outstanding choice. This variation is perfect for experienced apisto collectors or anyone chasing a new, showy display fish to elevate their planted or South American biotope setup. Their vibrant appearance, fascinating behaviour, and relatively small size make them a top-tier option for those wanting a more exotic touch to their aquarium.

The Red Neck Viejita is a selectively bred strain of the wild Apistogramma viejita, displaying intense coloration around the face and throat. As their name suggests, males develop a vivid red-orange hue on their gill plates and neck region, which becomes more intense as they mature and begin displaying. This is beautifully contrasted by metallic blue and green sheen across the body, along with bold black markings that run laterally and along the dorsal fin base. Like other apistogrammas, they have dramatic, extended dorsal and ventral fins that fan out during territorial displays or courtship. Being tank-raised, these fish are very adaptable and will settle easily into the home aquarium

Males and females are distinguishable once mature, with males showing larger fins, more vibrant colours, and bolder behaviour. Females are smaller, have a more subdued golden-yellow body tone, and may become especially bright during breeding, with increased contrast in their facial and ventral markings. Breeding is relatively straightforward; a pair will typically choose a secluded location like a cave or crevice to spawn. The female guards the eggs and fry, while the male patrols the territory. In the right conditions, fry can be raised quite successfully, making them a rewarding species to breed.

Tank Recommendations for your Apistogramma Viejita Red Neck

A pair of Apistogramma veijita red necks only need a tank volume of around 75 litres, as they are a small-growing fish. In order to find a breeding pair, you may need to start off with 4 - 6 fish, and in this situation, a larger aquarium may be required to avoid territorial disputes. A sand substrate is advisable as these cichlids will actively sift through the sand looking for food. They will also appreciate hiding areas around small pieces of driftwood, rock caves, and they will love a densely planted aquarium as well.
