Synodontis Ilebrevis

African Synodontis catfish are famous for their fascinating personalities, unusual swimming behaviour, and incredible hardiness. Synodontis ilebrevis is a less commonly available species that offers all of these desirable characteristics in a manageable size, making it an excellent choice for aquarists wanting something a little different for their African aquarium.

Synodontis ilebrevis displays a creamy silver body covered in irregular dark brown to black spotting that extends across both the body and fins. Their long barbels are constantly moving as they search the substrate for food, while their broad pectoral fins and streamlined body allow them to effortlessly navigate rockwork and caves. Like many Synodontis species, they become increasingly active during the evening and are well known for occasionally swimming upside down beneath driftwood or overhangs.

Sexing is difficult without close examination, although mature females generally develop a noticeably fuller body shape. Breeding in the home aquarium is extremely uncommon, with most available specimens being wild-caught or commercially bred.

Tank Recommendations for your Synodontis ilebrevis

A minimum aquarium size of 150 litres is recommended. These catfish appreciate aquariums with numerous caves, driftwood, and rocky structures where they can shelter throughout the day. Moderate water movement and excellent filtration are recommended, as they naturally inhabit well-oxygenated waterways.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Synodontis ilebrevis are peaceful bottom dwellers but are best kept alongside similarly sized fish.

Usually Compatible
African cichlids, rainbowfish, larger barbs, Congo tetras, and other medium-sized community fish occupy different levels of the aquarium.

Sometimes Compatible
Other Synodontis species or larger plecos can coexist successfully when plenty of hiding places are provided.

Rarely Compatible
Very small tetras, shrimp, or nano fish may eventually become prey, particularly as the Synodontis matures.

Feeding your Synodontis ilebrevis

These catfish are excellent scavengers and readily accept sinking pellets, algae wafers, and frozen foods. The ideal diet consists of quality carnivore pellets, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, prawns, and other meaty foods.
