There aren't many African catfish that become quite as impressive with age as Synodontis decorus. Synodontis are already well known in the aquarium hobby for their unusual shape, long barbels and tendency to become increasingly active once the lights begin to dim. However, S. decorus takes this a step further with some incredible adult finnage. Commonly known as the Clown Squeaker or Decorated Synodontis, this species originates throughout much of the Congo River basin and can eventually reach over 30 cm, making it a substantially larger catfish than its juvenile size may initially suggest.

Young Synodontis decorus display a pale silver to creamy grey body covered with contrasting black spots, with bold black and white patterning continuing through the tail. As these fish mature, their bodies become considerably deeper and more substantial. However, the feature that really transforms their appearance is the dorsal fin. The first dorsal ray can become dramatically elongated, extending backwards over the body and giving a mature fish an incredible silhouette as it cruises through the aquarium. Their deeply forked caudal fin and long barbels further exaggerate this appearance, whilst the spotted pattern means even younger specimens are immediately noticeable. Natural timber, smooth rocks and lighter substrates work particularly well with this species and create a fantastic Congo River-inspired display.

Sexing Synodontis decorus visually can be difficult, particularly with juvenile fish. Mature females generally become fuller through the abdomen, although external body shape alone isn't a completely reliable method of determining sex. Synodontis decorus is an egg-laying species, and distinct pairs form during reproduction. However, breeding is rarely encountered under normal aquarium conditions.

Tank Recommendations for Your Synodontis Decorus

Don't let the 7 cm sale size fool you, because this species has plenty of growing to do. Synodontis decorus can reach approximately 31.8 cm, so an aquarium of at least 300 litres is recommended for an adult, with additional floor space always being beneficial.

A sand or smooth gravel substrate, combined with large pieces of driftwood, rockwork and several caves, provides an excellent environment. These fish appreciate sheltered areas where they can retreat during the day before becoming increasingly active in the evening. Strong filtration, good oxygenation and plenty of open floor space should be provided as the fish matures.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Synodontis decorus is generally peaceful for a catfish capable of reaching over 30 cm. However, its eventual size means very small tank mates should be avoided.

Usually Compatible

Congo tetras, larger rainbowfish, silver dollars, Geophagus, Severums, African butterflyfish and other robust, medium-sized fish that are too large to be considered food.

Sometimes Compatible

Angelfish, larger African cichlids, other Synodontis and similarly sized catfish can work in sufficiently large aquariums, although plenty of caves and separate territories should be provided to reduce competition around the bottom.

Rarely Compatible

Small rasboras, nano tetras, shrimp and very small bottom-dwelling fish should generally be avoided, as a mature Synodontis decorus may attempt to eat fish small enough to fit into its mouth. Extremely aggressive cichlids may also continually harass the catfish despite its relatively robust build.

Feeding Your Synodontis Decorus

Synodontis decorus is an opportunistic omnivore and is incredibly easy to feed once settled into the aquarium. A quality sinking catfish pellet makes an excellent staple and can be supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, krill and occasional vegetable-based foods. Feeding towards the evening is ideal, as these fish naturally become more active as the aquarium lighting begins to dim.
