Synodontis Decorus 4cm
Synodontis have got to be one of the most recognisable groups of African catfish in the aquarium hobby, with their unusual body shape, long barbels, and often spectacular patterning making them very different from most commonly kept catfish. Synodontis decorus is arguably one of the most impressive members of the group, eventually developing into a substantial catfish with an incredibly elongated dorsal fin and bold spotted patterning.
Synodontis Decorus
Synodontis have got to be one of the most recognisable groups of African catfish in the aquarium hobby, with their unusual body shape, long barbels, and often spectacular patterning making them very different from most commonly kept catfish. Synodontis decorus is arguably one of the most impressive members of the group, eventually developing into a substantial catfish with an incredibly elongated dorsal fin and bold spotted patterning.
The body of Synodontis decorus develops a soft cream to silver-grey base colour covered with large, irregular black spots that continue across the head and fins. Younger fish can display stronger contrast between these colours, whilst mature individuals develop a more substantial body and increasingly impressive finnage. The real standout feature is the first ray of the dorsal fin, which becomes dramatically elongated as the fish grows, extending backwards over the body like a long filament. Their deeply forked tail is also patterned with bold black markings and gives the fish a surprisingly graceful appearance when cruising through the aquarium. Against lighter sand and natural timber, these darker markings really stand out and create a fantastic African river-style display.
Sexing Synodontis decorus externally can be quite difficult, particularly in younger fish, with mature females generally becoming fuller through the abdomen. Breeding is rarely achieved in the standard home aquarium and is considerably less straightforward than with many common community species. In nature, they are egg-laying fish; however, dedicated breeding generally requires mature specimens and carefully controlled conditions.
Tank Recommendations for your Synodontis Decorus
Synodontis decorus can eventually grow to around 30 cm and requires considerably more space than its juvenile size may initially suggest. A minimum aquarium volume of around 300 litres is recommended for an adult.
A sand substrate combined with large pieces of driftwood, rock caves, and shaded areas creates an excellent environment. Despite spending considerable time around the bottom, these are active and powerful catfish that appreciate plenty of room to move. Strong filtration and good oxygenation are recommended, particularly as the fish becomes larger.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Synodontis decorus is generally peaceful for its size; however, very small fish may be at risk once the catfish reaches adulthood.
Usually Compatible
Congo tetras, larger rainbowfish, silver dollars, African butterflyfish, peaceful medium-growing cichlids, and other robust fish too large to be considered food.
Sometimes Compatible
Severums, Geophagus, larger African cichlids, and other Synodontis can work in spacious aquariums; however, adequate territories and hiding places should be provided.
Rarely Compatible
Nano tetras, small rasboras, shrimp, and very small bottom-dwelling fish should be avoided, as a mature Synodontis decorus may attempt to eat anything small enough to fit into its mouth.
Feeding your Synodontis Decorus
Synodontis decorus is an opportunistic omnivore and will readily accept most aquarium foods. The ideal diet would be a quality sinking catfish pellet supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, prawns, and occasional vegetable-based foods. Feeding after the aquarium lights begin to dim can also encourage their natural behaviour.
