Spotted Leopard Discus are a show-stopping strain that combines the elegance of wild discus with the creative flair of captive breeding. These discus are part of a lineage refined by generations of expert breeders, resulting in intricate spotted patterns across the body. These spots mimic the appearance of a leopard’s rosettes, lending the fish their name and a reputation as one of the most mesmerising discus varieties available.

Like many popular strains, Spotted Leopard Discus are captive-bred, meaning they adapt well to aquarium life; however, they are still considered challenging fish and are best suited to aquarists with experience. Their base body colour ranges from soft beige or gold tones to deeper reds, but it is the bold red spotting and lacing across the body that truly stands out. These crimson markings often extend from face to tail, including the dorsal and anal fins, giving the fish an ornate, almost tattooed appearance. Some individuals may also display faint vertical barring or shimmering iridescence under the right lighting.

When kept in an optimal environment and in good health, these discus are breathtaking. Like all discus, Spotted Leopard Discus have specialised care requirements compared to most aquarium fish, particularly when it comes to temperature. Discus require elevated water temperatures of around 28–30 degrees to thrive and can be very sensitive to water parameters, making them more challenging to keep. They are, however, extremely peaceful and can be housed with a range of community fish that tolerate warmer water. Sexing discus is very difficult, as there are no obvious external differences between males and females. For breeding attempts, it is best to keep a group of at least five to six individuals and allow pairs to form naturally. Wild discus originate from the Amazon Basin.

Tank Recommendations for your Spotted Leopard Discus

Spotted Leopard Discus are large-growing fish, reaching around 20 cm in both length and height. Because of this, they require a relatively large aquarium of at least 200 litres. Larger aquariums are strongly recommended, as increased water volume provides more stable conditions, which discus prefer. Tank dimensions are also important, with both height and length needed to accommodate the tall body profile of the adult discus.

Discus can be shy at times, so an aquascape that provides both cover and open swimming space is ideal. This strain also appreciates live plants, which help them feel secure while enhancing their visual appeal. A blue background is especially effective for Spotted Leopard Discus, as it contrasts strongly with the red spotting and makes the fish stand out.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Spotted Leopard Discus are very peaceful fish. While discus may display mild territorial behaviour, it is rarely a concern. They are compatible with a wide range of community species; however, fast-moving fish should be avoided, as they may outcompete discus for food.

Cardinal tetras, German blue rams, corydoras, and other slow-moving, peaceful community fish.

Sometime Compatible

Fin-nipping species such as barbs, fast-moving or larger-bodied tetras, and some cichlids, such as black widow tetras. Shrimp may also be compatible in certain setups.

Rarely Compatible

Large, aggressive species such as African cichlids, Oscars, and Jaguar cichlids.

Feeding your Spotted Leopard Discus

Spotted Leopard Discus may be shy when first introduced, but will usually accept prepared aquarium foods once settled. Their ideal diet should consist of high-quality pellets or flakes, supplemented with frozen or live invertebrate-based foods such as brine shrimp or blackworms.
