Solid Red Pigeon Discus are easily one of the most popular, readily available, and vibrant discus strains in the hobby. Their striking colouration features a deep red tone that is rarely seen in other aquarium fish, and it is this simplicity that quite possibly makes them such a sought-after strain. As a captive-developed variety, they adapt well to aquarium life, but they are certainly not considered beginner fish.

Often regarded as the pinnacle display fish of the freshwater aquarium hobby, discus are highly sought after by aquarists worldwide. As the name suggests, the Solid Red Pigeon Discus is almost entirely covered in a rich, tomato-red colour, which becomes especially bold as the fish mature. The only real break in this intense colouration is the pale, cream-coloured face, which gently fades into soft yellow tones. Their striking red eye rims add further contrast, making this strain truly eye-catching.

When kept healthy and in optimal conditions, these discus are breathtaking. Like all discus, the Solid Red Pigeon strain has specific care requirements compared to most aquarium fish, particularly when it comes to temperature. Discus require elevated water temperatures of around 28–30°C to thrive and are also very sensitive to water parameters, which can make them challenging to keep. Despite this, they are extremely peaceful fish and can be housed with a wide range of community species that tolerate warmer water. Sexing discus is very difficult, as there are no obvious external differences between males and females. If breeding is attempted, it is best to purchase a group of at least five to six individuals and allow pairs to form naturally. Wild discus originate from the Amazon Basin and display very different colouration compared to the Solid Red Pigeon strain.

Tank Recommendations for your Solid Red Pigeon Discus

Solid Red Pigeon Discus are large-growing fish, reaching up to 20 cm in both length and height. Due to their size, they require a relatively large aquarium of at least 250 litres, though larger tanks are strongly recommended. Increased water volume provides more stable conditions, which is essential for discus. Tank dimensions are also important, with both height and length needed to accommodate the discus’ tall, disc-shaped body.

Discus can be shy at times, so an aquascape that offers both cover and open swimming space will be best appreciated. Solid Red Pigeon Discus also respond very well to planted aquariums, where their colouration stands out beautifully. A blue background is another excellent choice for this strain, as it contrasts strongly with the red tones and makes the fish visually pop.

Solid Red Pigeon Discus are extremely peaceful fish. While discus can be very mildly territorial, this behaviour is rarely problematic. They are compatible with a wide range of community species, though fast-moving fish should be avoided as they may outcompete discus for food.

Feeding your Solid Red Pigeon Discus

Solid Red Pigeon Discus may be shy when first introduced, but will usually accept prepared aquarium foods without issue. Their ideal diet should consist of a high-quality discus foods like pellet or flake, supplemented with frozen or live invertebrate-based foods such as brine shrimp or blackworms.
