The smooth toadfish is a species of fish in the pufferfish family Tetraodontidae.
It is native to shallow coastal and estuarine waters of southeastern Australia, where it is widespread and abundant.
It occurs from southern Queensland to Tasmania and as far west as the central coast of South Australia
Despite its 'friendly' appearance, the fish is toxic and should not be eaten.
They can be recognised by the colour pattern.
It is sandy coloured to pale greenish above and white below.
The back and sides are covered with dark blotches.
There is a dark band between the eyes, another between the pectoral fins and a third through the dorsal fin base.
Adults can vary in size and get up to 16cm.
