The Silver Scat is a fascinating and hardy fish that is often recommended for aquarists interested in brackish water aquariums. These fish originate from coastal regions and estuaries throughout the Indo-Pacific, where freshwater rivers meet the ocean, making them well adapted to a wide range of water conditions.
Silver scats have a very distinctive body shape that is almost perfectly round and laterally compressed. Their silver bodies are often covered with dark speckles or spots that vary between individuals. As they mature, their bodies become more metallic and reflective, creating a beautiful shimmering effect under aquarium lighting. Their disc-like shape, combined with their constant swimming behaviour, makes them very noticeable in larger aquariums.
Breeding silver scats in captivity is rarely achieved in the home aquarium due to their complex breeding requirements and the need for marine spawning conditions. Most fish available in the aquarium hobby are wild-caught or commercially farmed in specialised facilities.
Tank Recommendations for Your Silver Scat
Silver scats grow relatively large and are very active swimmers, meaning they require a spacious aquarium. A minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended.
As a brackish species, they will thrive in aquariums with slightly saline water conditions. A sandy substrate combined with rockwork and open swimming space will provide an ideal environment.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Silver scats are peaceful but can be boisterous due to their size and active behaviour.
