Shelford's Kuhli Loach

There are very few bottom-dwelling fish that manage to combine personality, usefulness, and outright charm quite like kuhli loaches. While the classic striped kuhli is by far the most recognisable, Shelford's Kuhli Loach offers something a little more unusual for enthusiasts wanting a rarer species. Their peaceful temperament, fascinating behaviour, and snake-like appearance make them one of the most entertaining fish to keep in a planted community aquarium.

Shelford's Kuhli Loach displays a slender eel-like body decorated with alternating dark chocolate and golden-brown bands that extend from head to tail. Their colours are generally softer than the common kuhli loach, giving them a more natural appearance that blends beautifully among leaf litter, driftwood, and planted aquascapes. During the day, they often remain hidden beneath timber or buried in the substrate, but as the lights dim, they become incredibly active, weaving through every corner of the aquarium in search of food.

Sexing Shelford's Kuhli Loach is relatively difficult, although mature females generally become noticeably fuller-bodied than males when carrying eggs. Captive breeding remains uncommon due to the specialised environmental conditions required, with most specimens still being collected from the wild or produced through specialist breeding programs.

Tank Recommendations for your Shelford's Kuhli Loach

Shelford's Kuhli Loaches should always be maintained in groups of six or more, with larger groups producing much more confident and natural behaviour. A minimum aquarium size of 75 litres is recommended.

A soft sand substrate is highly recommended, as these loaches love burrowing and foraging beneath the surface. Plenty of driftwood, caves, leaf litter, and dense planting will help them feel secure while encouraging natural behaviour.

Shelford's Kuhli Loaches are exceptionally peaceful and make excellent additions to community aquariums.

Usually Compatible

Rasboras, ember tetras, harlequin rasboras, corydoras, gouramis, dwarf rainbowfish, and almost any peaceful community fish that occupy the upper water column.

Sometimes Compatible

Shrimp, dwarf cichlids, and peaceful Bettas may coexist successfully, provided there is plenty of cover throughout the aquarium.

Rarely Compatible

Large cichlids, predatory catfish, and aggressive bottom dwellers should generally be avoided, as they may harass these gentle loaches or outcompete them during feeding.

Feeding your Shelford's Kuhli Loach

Shelford's Kuhli Loaches are enthusiastic scavengers and readily accept sinking foods. A quality sinking pellet should form the basis of their diet, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, baby brine shrimp, and other small meaty foods that naturally settle onto the substrate.
