Sakura Oranda
Fancy goldfish continue to be one of the most loved ornamental fish groups in the aquarium hobby, and the Sakura Oranda is a truly elegant variety within this category. The word "Sakura" often refers to the delicate pink-white cherry blossom-style colouration that makes this strain so desirable. Combined with the signature oranda wen growth and flowing finnage, this fish becomes a graceful centrepiece for fancy goldfish aquariums.
Sakura Orandas typically display a soft blend of white, pink, peach, and translucent red tones spread beautifully across the rounded body and fins. Some individuals may show nacreous scaling that gives sections of the body a semi-transparent quality, which enhances the delicate cherry blossom appearance. The defining feature of the oranda is the fleshy wen growth across the top of the head, which develops more prominently with age. Their broad tail and flowing dorsal fin give them an incredibly elegant swimming motion, especially in larger fancy goldfish aquariums.
Sexing is difficult outside of the breeding season, though males may develop breeding tubercles and chase females when conditions are right. Females become noticeably fuller-bodied when carrying eggs. Spawning follows the classic goldfish method, with eggs scattered across plants or spawning mops.
Tank Recommendations for Your Sakura Oranda
Fancy goldfish like this are best kept in aquariums of 150 litres or larger, depending on the number of fish. Strong filtration is essential due to the waste produced by goldfish, but water flow should still remain gentle enough for slower fancy varieties. Open swimming space combined with smooth décor is ideal, especially to protect the wen growth.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Sakura Orandas are peaceful and best suited to other fancy goldfish.
Usually Compatible
Ranchu, telescope goldfish, lionhead, and other orandas.
Sometimes Compatible
Other slow fancy varieties.
Rarely Compatible
Comets or common goldfish, which may outcompete them.
Feeding Your Sakura Oranda
These fish are very food-motivated and do best on slower-sinking foods that reduce the risk of buoyancy issues. The ideal diet would be a high-quality sinking fancy goldfish pellet, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blanched peas, or spinach to maintain healthy wen growth and strong digestion.
