Sailfin Balloon Mollies are a delightful twist on the classic sailfin molly, combining the same vivid colouration and flowing fins with a rounded, compact body shape. Often regarded as one of the more charming livebearers, balloon mollies have surged in popularity thanks to their adorable appearance and manageable size. These are fantastic fish for beginner and experienced aquarists alike due to their peaceful nature, hardiness, and beautiful colour morphs.

Through generations of selective breeding, Sailfin Balloon Mollies have been developed in a variety of colour forms, including black, white, orange, gold, and marble. Their defining feature is their balloon-like body, which is shorter and more rounded than a typical molly. This unique shape adds a lot of visual interest and gives the fish a waddling, bobbing movement that's both comical and cute. Despite their compact form, these mollies still showcase the elegant, high dorsal "sailfin" that gives the strain its name. Their fins are large, flowing, and often edged with striking colour, making them a beautiful choice for planted or decorative aquariums. As livebearers, they're prolific breeders and will readily produce fry under the right conditions, especially when kept in a peaceful tank with plenty of cover.

Balloon mollies tend to grow a little smaller than standard sailfin mollies, reaching up to 8-10 cm in length. They are known algae grazers and will actively peck at plants, hardscape, and tank surfaces, making them a low-effort addition for keeping nuisance algae in check. As with all mollies, they can live in freshwater, brackish, and even marine aquariums which is a testament to their adaptability. Their natural ancestors are native to coastal regions across Mexico and South America.

Tank Recommendations for your Sailfin Balloon Molly

Due to their smaller size and reduced swimming ability compared to standard-bodied mollies, a minimum tank size of 75 litres is suitable for Sailfin Balloon Mollies. However, they still appreciate plenty of open space and horizontal swimming room. Because of their high tolerance for various water conditions, they're easy to accommodate. A crushed coral or aragonite sand substrate is ideal for maintaining their preferred higher pH range.

They will also enjoy plants in the aquarium, with great options being ferns, Anubias, pogostemon, and vallesneria as these are large and denser growing plants and allow for great natural breeding grounds and places for fry to grow. As mentioned, balloon sailfin mollies are in fact considered to be a 'hard water' fish, meaning they prefer the water to have an elevated PH and are not like a tetra. This higher PH of 7 - 8 can be achieved with a PH buffer or African cichlid lake conditioning salts.

Suitable Tank Buddies

The sailfin balloon molly is a very peaceful aquarium fish that can get along with a wide range of tank mates, both in fresh and saltwater conditions. They are great with a wide range of community aquarium fish; however slower slower-moving fish should be avoided as these mollies may outcompete them.

Rainbow fish, mudskippers, platies, danios, loaches, and a lot of other common aquarium fish.

Sometimes Compatible

Smaller-sized fish such as neon or cardinal tetras, bottom-dwelling fish such as Corydoras, and certain slower-moving species like apistogramma or angelfish

Rarely Compatible

Large and aggressive species that would prey on the mollies, such as oscars and very slow-moving fish like discus or borneo suckers, which would be outcompeted by the sailfin balloon mollies.

Feeding your Sailfin Balloon Molly

The sailfin balloon molly is a very easy fish to feed. They will take a wide range of pellets, flakes, and frozen foods. Just like any fish, though, they should be fed a varied diet with a mix of different foods. The ideal diet would be a good quality floating pellet or flake, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, black worms, or even live foods like baby brine shrimp.
