Chilotilapia rhoadesii, commonly known as the Rhodesii Cichlid, is a stunning and boisterous freshwater fish native to the rocky shores of Lake Malawi in Africa. It's distinctive appearance and active behaviour make it a prized species among cichlid enthusiasts. The Rhodesii Cichlid boasts a sleek, elongated body with a unique colour palette that varies between males and females. Males are particularly eye-catching, displaying a brilliant blue or turquoise hue with striking dark vertical bars along their sides. Breeding Chilotilapia rhoadesii in captivity is a rewarding challenge for experienced aquarists. They are maternal mouthbrooders, meaning the female will carry and protect the fertilised eggs and fry them in her mouth until they are ready to fend for themselves. Providing a spacious breeding tank with plenty of hiding spots and a few flat rocks for spawning sites is essential. Tank Recommendations for your Chilotilapia Rhoadesii
Due to their size and active nature, Rhodesii Cichlids require a large aquarium with a minimum volume of 300 litres. They thrive in a setup that mimics their natural rocky habitat, with plenty of rocks and caves to establish territories and hide. A sandy or fine gravel substrate is ideal, and robust filtration is necessary to maintain water quality. These cichlids prefer water conditions with a pH of 7.0-8.5 and a temperature range of 24-28°C.
