The scats are a distinctive deep-bodied fish, Scatophagidae, of fishes in the order Perciformes.
They are small fishes native to the Indian and western Pacific oceans that have become common and popular in the aquarium trade in recent years. The largest species reach 38 cm in length and some have been known to live more than twenty years in captivity given the proper water conditions. They are scavengers, feeding on algae and feces, hence their name, from Greek skatos meaning "feces" and phagein meaning "eat". Ideal tank mates include Puffers, Monos, Archers, and other Brackish water fish.
Very good aquarium fish, they accept most water conditions except for soft acidic water. They are not fussy about diet and have very healthy appetites; very small specimens (<3cm) should be fed often. They can grow to 25cm or more but are usually much smaller in aquaria.
Red Scats can change color and pattern dramatically depending on mood (see photos).
