Corydoras Peru Neon Gold Stripe 3.5cm

Corydoras aeneus
Corydoras have become one of the most popular groups of catfish in the aquarium hobby thanks to their peaceful nature, constant activity, and the incredible number of different species available. Whilst many Corydoras are known for spots, masks, and darker markings, some species instead develop brilliant metallic stripes along the body. The Peru Neon Gold Stripe Corydoras is a fantastic example of this, combining classic Corydoras behaviour with a bright golden stripe that makes a group of these fish incredibly noticeable across the bottom of the aquarium.

Peru Neon Gold Stripe Corydoras

Corydoras have become one of the most popular groups of catfish in the aquarium hobby thanks to their peaceful nature, constant activity, and the incredible number of different species available. Whilst many Corydoras are known for spots, masks, and darker markings, some species instead develop brilliant metallic stripes along the body. The Peru Neon Gold Stripe Corydoras is a fantastic example of this, combining classic Corydoras behaviour with a bright golden stripe that makes a group of these fish incredibly noticeable across the bottom of the aquarium.

The Peru Neon Gold Stripe Corydoras develops a warm bronze to olive body with a brilliant metallic gold stripe running horizontally along the upper flank, from behind the head towards the tail. Under quality aquarium lighting, this stripe can almost appear fluorescent, shifting between gold, yellow, and subtle green depending on the angle of the fish. The lower body remains considerably lighter, whilst the fins are mostly transparent, meaning the bright dorsal stripe becomes the real focal point. Against dark sand, driftwood, and lush green plants, the gold colouration really shines through. Like most Corydoras, however, half of their appeal comes from their behaviour, with a school constantly moving across the substrate, burying their faces into the sand, and investigating almost every corner of the aquarium.

Sexing Peru Neon Gold Stripe Corydoras becomes easier once mature, with females developing a noticeably broader and deeper body than the slimmer males, particularly when viewed from above. Like most Corydoras, they display the classic T-position during breeding before the female deposits adhesive eggs across aquarium glass, plants, and décor. Cooler water changes combined with generous feeding of frozen or live foods can often encourage mature groups to begin spawning.

Tank Recommendations for Your Peru Neon Gold Stripe Corydoras

Peru Neon Gold Stripe Corydoras should always be maintained in groups of at least six, although larger schools will produce considerably more confident and natural behaviour. A minimum aquarium size of 75 litres is recommended.

A soft sand substrate is ideal because these fish naturally spend much of their day sifting through the bottom using their sensitive barbels. Driftwood, plants, and leaf litter provide excellent areas of shelter whilst still leaving plenty of exposed sand for the group to forage across. Darker substrates also create a fantastic contrast against the metallic golden stripe.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Peru Neon Gold Stripe Corydoras are incredibly peaceful bottom dwellers and are suitable for a huge range of community aquariums.

Usually Compatible

Cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, pencilfish, rasboras, angelfish, peaceful dwarf cichlids, bristlenose catfish, and other similarly peaceful South American community species.

Sometimes Compatible

Discus, Geophagus, larger gouramis, and medium-growing peaceful cichlids can coexist successfully, provided the Corydoras aren't intimidated or continually outcompeted during feeding.

Rarely Compatible

Oscars, Jaguar Cichlids, large predatory catfish, and aggressive bottom dwellers should generally be avoided, as they may prey upon, injure, or continually harass the Corydoras.

Feeding Your Peru Neon Gold Stripe Corydoras

These Corydoras readily accept a wide variety of sinking aquarium foods. The ideal diet would consist of a quality sinking pellet or wafer, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, and brine shrimp. Like all Corydoras, they should be deliberately fed and should never be expected to survive purely on leftover food from other fish.
