Peacock Cichlid "Eureka Red"

There are hundreds of African cichlids available in the aquarium hobby, but if someone asked for a fish that perfectly represents Lake Malawi, the Eureka Red Peacock would have to be near the top of the list. Combining electric blues with intense reds and oranges, this selectively bred peacock is one of the most colourful freshwater fish available and quickly becomes the centrepiece of any African cichlid aquarium.

Mature males develop an incredible blend of metallic electric blue across the head and face, which gradually transitions into fiery orange and crimson through the shoulders, body and fins. Depending on mood and dominance, these colours can become almost fluorescent under aquarium lighting. Females remain much more subdued, displaying soft silver and grey tones that provide a striking contrast to the dominant males. Their streamlined body and constant cruising behaviour mean they are almost always on display among the rockwork.

Sexing is straightforward once mature, with males developing the spectacular red and blue coloration while females remain silver-grey. Like other peacock cichlids, females are maternal mouthbrooders, carrying eggs and fry inside their mouths until the young are ready to fend for themselves.

Tank Recommendations for your Eureka Red Peacock

A minimum aquarium size of 250 litres is recommended, with larger aquariums preferred when housing multiple peacocks or mixed African cichlid communities. Rocky aquascapes with numerous caves and broken lines of sight help establish territories while still leaving open swimming areas. Strong filtration and highly oxygenated water are essential for long-term success.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Eureka Red Peacocks are among the more peaceful African cichlids but still require compatible tank mates.

Usually Compatible

Other peacock cichlids, haps, Protomelas, Copadichromis, Synodontis catfish and similarly tempered Malawi species.

Sometimes Compatible

Larger mbuna species may coexist successfully, provided the aquarium is spacious and aggression is well distributed.

Rarely Compatible

South American cichlids, community fish and extremely aggressive mbuna should generally be avoided due to differences in temperament and water chemistry.

Feeding your Eureka Red Peacock

These fish readily accept high-quality cichlid pellets and benefit from a varied diet. Supplementing with frozen brine shrimp, mysis shrimp and occasional bloodworms will help maximise colour while maintaining excellent body condition. Feeding small portions once or twice daily is ideal.
