Parrot Cichlid

The parrot or Nicaraguan cichlid would have to be one of the most stunning yet underrated cichlid species available in the aquarium hobby. This is a peaceful Central American species native to the rivers and lakes of Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Honduras. The parrot cichlid is known for its striking coloration, robust size, and phenomenal temperament which makes them a great centrepiece fish for a community aquarium.

The parrot cichlid has quite a palette of colours that intensify as it matures. Its body typically features a golden to yellow base, accented by shades of blue, green, and orange, creating a dazzling iridescent effect. The face is often marked with turquoise or blue highlights which then leads to the warmer toned body. The fins all sport a metallic green which just ties all the colours together amazingly. Last but not least is the jet-black lateral line that runs from the gill plate to the start of the tail. Parrot Cichlids can reach a length of 20-25 cm, making them a striking centrepiece in larger tanks.

Parrot Cichlids are generally peaceful compared to other Central American cichlids, though they may become territorial during spawning. They are social and display fascinating interactions, especially when kept in pairs or groups. Breeding in captivity is relatively straightforward. A pair will begin by choosing flat surfaces such as rocks or slate to lay their eggs. Both parents actively guard and care for the eggs and fry, exhibiting strong parental instincts. Providing ample hiding spaces and a calm environment encourages natural breeding behaviour.

Tank Recommendations for your Parrot Cichlid
Given their size and active nature, parrot cichlids require a spacious aquarium of at least 200 litres. A sandy or fine gravel substrate is ideal, and the tank should be decorated with driftwood, rocks, along with hardy plants like Anubias or Java Fern. While they are generally plant-safe, they may occasionally dig, so secure plants appropriately. Water conditions should mimic their natural habitat, with a temperature range of 24-28°C, a pH of 7.0-8.0, and moderate to hard water.

Suitable Tank Buddies
Parrot Cichlids are relatively peaceful for their size and temperament, making them compatible with a variety of other medium to large fish. However, they may become territorial, so tank mates should be chosen carefully to prevent conflict.

Usually Compatible
Flag tail prochilodus, silver dollars, rainbow cichlids, larger tetras like black widows, and even large livebearers like mollies.

Sometimes Compatible
Semi-aggressive species like Jack Dempseys or Green Terrors may coexist with Parrot Cichlids in very large tanks with plenty of space and hiding spots.

Rarely Compatible
Highly aggressive species like Red Devils or Flowerhorns are unsuitable, as they may outcompete or harm the Parrot Cichlids.

Feeding your Parrot Cichlid
Parrot Cichlids are omnivores and require a varied diet to maintain their vibrant coloration and health. High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes should form the base of their diet, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, or krill. They will also appreciate vegetable matter like blanched spinach, zucchini, or spirulina-based foods.
