Panaqolus plecos have become incredibly popular over the past decade thanks to their manageable size, striking patterns, and suitability for planted community aquariums. The L397 is one of the more attractive members of the genus, displaying beautiful contrasting stripes over a compact body while retaining the peaceful temperament that makes these smaller plecos so desirable. Unlike many larger plecos, this species remains relatively small throughout its life, making it an excellent addition to medium-sized aquariums.

Panaqolus L397

Panaqolus plecos have become incredibly popular over the past decade thanks to their manageable size, striking patterns, and suitability for planted community aquariums. The L397 is one of the more attractive members of the genus, displaying beautiful contrasting stripes over a compact body while retaining the peaceful temperament that makes these smaller plecos so desirable. Unlike many larger plecos, this species remains relatively small throughout its life, making it an excellent addition to medium-sized aquariums.

The L397 displays a deep chocolate brown to charcoal body overlaid with bold cream to golden striping that runs from the head through to the tail. Every individual carries slightly different markings, making each fish unique. Their broad sucker mouth, flattened body, and large pectoral fins allow them to comfortably cling to driftwood and rockwork while grazing throughout the day. As the fish matures, the contrast between the dark body and lighter striping generally becomes even more pronounced, especially when maintained on a nutritious diet.

Sexing is possible once mature, with males developing broader heads and noticeably larger odontodes (bristles) along the pectoral fins and body. Like many Hypancistrus and Panaqolus species, they are cave spawners, with the male guarding the eggs inside a narrow cave until the fry hatch.

Tank Recommendations for your Panaqolus L397

A minimum aquarium size of 80 litres is recommended, although larger aquariums provide greater stability and additional grazing surfaces. These plecos appreciate well-oxygenated aquariums with moderate water movement, driftwood, caves, and shaded hiding places. Unlike many common plecos, they spend a large amount of time resting beneath wood during daylight hours, making multiple hiding locations essential.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Panaqolus L397 are extremely peaceful and make excellent community fish.

Usually Compatible

Corydoras, tetras, rasboras, rainbowfish, dwarf cichlids, angelfish, and most peaceful community fish that occupy the upper and middle levels of the aquarium.

Sometimes Compatible

Other plecos or bottom-dwelling catfish can be kept together, provided enough caves and territories are available to reduce competition.

Rarely Compatible

Large aggressive cichlids such as Jaguars, Dovii, or Red Devils may continually harass the pleco and prevent it from feeding comfortably.

Feeding your Panaqolus L397

Panaqolus L397 are omnivorous with a preference for both vegetable matter and protein-rich foods. A quality sinking pleco pellet should form the basis of their diet, supplemented with algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional frozen bloodworms or blackworms to maintain excellent health and colour.
