Mylochromis Melanotaenia
Lake Malawi is home to hundreds of spectacular cichlids, but not all of them rely purely on bright blues and yellows to stand out. Mylochromis melanotaenia is a fantastic example of a more naturally coloured haplochromine that develops incredible metallic tones and elegant finnage as it matures. While it isn't as commonly seen as peacocks or mbuna, it has earned a strong following among African cichlid enthusiasts looking for something a little different.
Adult males develop a beautiful metallic silver-blue body overlaid with iridescent turquoise highlights that shimmer as they move through the aquarium. Running from the eye to the tail is a bold black lateral stripe, which gives the species its scientific name, melanotaenia, meaning "black band". During breeding condition, the face often develops brighter electric blue tones, while subtle gold and bronze hues appear across the shoulders and dorsal fin. Females remain considerably more subdued, displaying attractive silver and grey patterning that allows the dominant males to truly steal the spotlight.
Sexing these fish is relatively straightforward once mature, with males developing significantly brighter colours, extended finnage, and a larger overall body size. Like many Lake Malawi haps, females are maternal mouthbrooders, carrying fertilised eggs and fry inside their mouths for several weeks before releasing fully developed juveniles.
Tank Recommendations for your Mylochromis melanotaenia
A minimum aquarium size of 300 litres is recommended, particularly if housing multiple African cichlid species. Rockwork should provide natural territories while still allowing generous open swimming areas. Strong filtration and excellent water movement are essential to replicate the highly oxygenated waters of Lake Malawi.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Mylochromis melanotaenia are relatively peaceful for an African hap but should still be housed alongside similarly sized species.
Usually Compatible
Peacock cichlids, Protomelas, Copadichromis, larger Synodontis catfish, and other peaceful haplochromines that enjoy similar water conditions.
Sometimes Compatible
Larger mbuna species and Frontosa juveniles may coexist in larger aquariums, provided territories are well established and aggression is monitored.
Rarely Compatible
South American cichlids, peaceful community fish, and highly aggressive mbuna species should generally be avoided due to differences in temperament and water chemistry.
Feeding your Mylochromis melanotaenia
Mylochromis melanotaenia readily accepts quality cichlid pellets and benefits from a varied diet. Supplementing with frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and occasional bloodworms helps maintain excellent colour and body condition while avoiding excessive fatty foods.
