Mudskippers are very unusual looking gobies, adapted to living amongst tidal mangrove swamps of northern Australia, at low tide they can be seen crawling or hopping over the exposed mudflats. They make great aquarium subjects, preferring a partially filled (slightly brackish) aquarium, landscaped so that the fish have plenty of room both above and below water. Mudskippers accept most foods and prefer to feed out of the water (place the food in a shallow dish for easier maintenance.) Maximum size 10-15cm.
- pH 7.0 – 8.0,
- SG 1.015—1.020
Artificial sea salt should be used to achieve the desired salinity.
Temp: 24 ºC - 28ºC
Mudskippers enjoy Live Worm, and can also be successfully trained to eat Frozen Blood Worm and Freeze-Dried Black Worms over time.
Mudskippers are able to leave the water so take care to provide them with a large but shallow tank with soft sand and lots of mangrove roots where they
can rest, As their skin needs to be moist, ensure that the air in the tank is humid.
Mudskippers can be territorial and will raise and lower their dorsal fins in aggressive displays.
Keeping too many in one tank can lead to fights, often to death. It is preferable to have only one Mudskipper per tank.
