There probably isn't another livebearer quite as reliable as the Molly. Hardy, colourful and constantly active, Mollies have remained one of the most popular aquarium fish for decades. The Mini Red Calico Molly combines the compact size of mini strains with the incredible patchwork colouration that calico fish are famous for, making them a brilliant addition to planted community aquariums.

Every Mini Red Calico Molly develops its own unique blend of brilliant red, orange, crisp white and jet-black markings, meaning no two fish ever look exactly alike. Their compact body and active swimming behaviour make them a constant source of movement, while subtle metallic blue highlights may appear across the scales depending on the lighting. Against green plants or darker backgrounds, the bright calico colours become even more impressive.

Like other mollies, these fish are livebearers and among the easiest freshwater fish to breed. Males can be identified by their modified anal fin (gonopodium), while females grow noticeably larger and fuller-bodied. Under suitable conditions, females may produce fully formed fry every four to six weeks.

Tank Recommendations for your Mini Red Calico Molly

A minimum aquarium size of 40 litres is recommended for a small group. Mollies appreciate planted aquariums with open swimming space and naturally prefer harder, alkaline water conditions. Stable filtration and regular water changes will keep these active fish thriving.

Mini Red Calico Mollies are peaceful and make excellent community fish.

Usually Compatible
Platies, guppies, swordtails, ricefish, pseudomugils, corydoras and other peaceful hard-water community fish.

Sometimes Compatible
Peaceful gouramis, rainbowfish and larger tetras may coexist successfully, provided they are not aggressive fin nippers.

Rarely Compatible
Tiger barbs, larger cichlids and predatory fish should generally be avoided.

Feeding your Mini Red Calico Molly

These fish readily accept flakes, pellets and frozen foods. A quality flake or small floating pellet supplemented with frozen bloodworms, baby brine shrimp and vegetable matter such as spirulina will help maintain excellent health and vibrant colouration.
