Julidochromis Marlieri

Lake Tanganyika is famous for cichlids that have evolved to occupy incredibly specific niches, and Julidochromis marlieri is a perfect example. Rather than cruising through open water like many larger African cichlids, Julidochromis spend much of their lives closely associated with rocky shorelines, navigating through caves, cracks and narrow passages in search of food and secure territories. Their elongated body and incredible patterning make them completely different from the more familiar Mbuna and Peacock cichlids commonly seen in African aquariums.

Julidochromis marlieri develops a pale cream to golden body covered with a striking network of dark brown to almost black markings. Horizontal lines run along the body and intersect with darker vertical bars, producing an almost checkerboard or maze-like pattern across the flanks. Subtle blue highlights can become visible along the edges of the fins under strong aquarium lighting, whilst the dark markings become increasingly bold as the fish matures. Their elongated body allows them to effortlessly move through extremely narrow gaps in rockwork, and established fish will spend much of their time moving between caves before suddenly appearing in open water to feed or defend their territory.

Sexing Julidochromis marlieri can be surprisingly difficult, as males and females display very similar colouration. Females are often somewhat larger and fuller-bodied once mature. Compatible adults form strong pairs and are cave or crevice spawners, depositing eggs on protected rocky surfaces where both parents participate in defending the territory. Once established, pairs may repeatedly produce new broods, and it isn't unusual to see several generations of juveniles living amongst the rockwork alongside their parents.

Tank Recommendations for Your Julidochromis Marlieri

A minimum aquarium size of around 100 litres is recommended for a compatible pair, with considerably more space required when maintaining multiple adults or combining them with other Tanganyikan cichlids.

Rockwork is absolutely essential and should be arranged to create numerous caves, narrow passages and broken lines of sight. Sand makes an excellent substrate, and the water should remain hard, alkaline and extremely stable. Although relatively small, established pairs can become highly territorial around their chosen section of rockwork, particularly whilst breeding.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Julidochromis marlieri is territorial rather than outright aggressive and works extremely well in a carefully planned Lake Tanganyika aquarium.

Usually Compatible

Shell dwellers, appropriately selected Altolamprologus, Synodontis and other Tanganyikan species occupying different areas of a sufficiently large aquarium.

Sometimes Compatible

Other Julidochromis and similarly sized rock-dwelling Tanganyikan cichlids may coexist where extensive territories and visual barriers are available, although aggression between competing pairs can become significant.

Rarely Compatible

Peaceful South American community fish, Bettas, guppies, Discus and species requiring soft, acidic water should be avoided. Large, aggressive African cichlids can also overpower these comparatively small rock dwellers.

Feeding Your Julidochromis Marlieri

Julidochromis marlieri is primarily carnivorous and naturally feeds on small crustaceans, insect larvae and other invertebrates found amongst rocky surfaces. A quality small cichlid pellet makes an excellent staple and can be supplemented with frozen brine shrimp, mysis, daphnia and similar appropriately sized foods.
