Male Moscow Blue Guppy
Guppies have long been one of the most genetically diverse and visually rewarding fish in the aquarium hobby, with new colour strains constantly being refined by breeders around the world. The Male Moscow Blue Guppy is one of the most iconic and sought-after strains, famous for its deep velvet blue body colour and elegant, flowing finnage. For hobbyists who enjoy rich, solid colour strains, this is one of the cleanest and most striking guppies available.
The Moscow Blue strain is instantly recognisable for its saturated dark royal blue to navy body colour that often extends seamlessly from the nose through the caudal peduncle and tail. Under aquarium lighting, this colour can deepen into a velvety cobalt tone with subtle metallic highlights that shimmer as the fish turns. The fins are usually broad and flowing, often carrying the same saturated blue through the dorsal and caudal fins, which gives the fish a very polished, uniform look. In planted aquariums, the contrast of the deep blue body against bright green plants is particularly impressive.
Sexing is straightforward, with males displaying the signature deep blue body colour and larger finnage, while females are much duller in colour and have a fuller body shape. Like all guppies, this is a livebearing species, with females giving birth to fully formed fry after a gestation period of around four weeks. Maintaining line quality is particularly important with Moscow strains to preserve the solid blue body coverage.
Tank Recommendations for Your Male Moscow Blue Guppy
A trio or small group can be comfortably housed in aquariums from 40 litres or larger, though larger planted community aquariums allow the finnage and colour to stand out beautifully.
These fish do especially well in planted tanks with open upper swimming areas and stable, harder water conditions. Floating plants can help diffuse lighting slightly, which often makes the deep blue colour appear even richer.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Moscow Blue guppies are peaceful and ideal for community aquariums.
Usually Compatible
Platies, mollies, rasboras, blue-eyes, and other nano community fish.
Sometimes Compatible
Peaceful gouramis or slower tetras.
Rarely Compatible
Fin-nippers such as tiger barbs or larger aggressive fish.
Feeding Your Male Moscow Blue Guppy
These guppies are extremely easy to feed and will readily take floating foods from the surface. Because of their smaller mouth size, nano foods work best. The ideal diet would be a high-quality floating nano pellet or fine flake, supplemented with frozen baby brine shrimp, microworms, or crushed bloodworms to maintain strong finnage and deepen the rich blue colouration.
